West Side man charged in baseball bat assault

STAMFORD -- A three-year-old dispute over a $150 debt erupted on the West Side late Wednesday night as an undocumented Guatemalan immigrant smashed a baseball bat into a man's head, nearly killing him.

Rodolfo Calate-Morente, of 48 Aberdeen St., was charged with first-degree assault and may face more serious charges if the victim dies. The victim, identified by a witness as Oscar Hernandez, remains in critical condition at Stamford Hospital after suffering a blood clot to the brain.

Stamford Police Lt. Diedrich Hohn said the man is in "very, very serious condition" and at one point he lost all vital signs and had to be stabilized by hospital staff.

Hernandez had been harassing Calate-Morente and his wife Mirza Cortez "for an extended period of time" at their West Side home, according to police. Hohn said Hernandez was struck once in the head at Calate-Morente's home.

Victor Biancardi, Jr., an attorney representing Calate-Morente said Cortez did have a protective order to keep Hernandez away, but it had expired. During an arraignment hearing in state Superior Court in Stamford Thursday, Biancardi told Judge Anthony Truglia that the couple did not want to go to police because they were undocumented immigrants.

Biancardi said just before the man was struck with the bat shortly before 10:30 p.m., he had come to Calate-Morente and Cortez' home and was pounding and kicking the door.

"My client was defending his wife and his family against this crazed individual," Biancardi said. "It was very hot. This man kept bothering him and he took matters into his own hands."

Through a friend who speaks English, Cortez said Hernandez used to follow her around. Cortez did acknowledge that she owed Hernandez $150.

Truglia ordered Calate-Morente held on $500,000 bond. Calate-Morente has been in the U.S. for 13 years and has never been arrested, according to court records.

Calate-Morente had his case transferred to the Part A docket where the most serious cases in the area are decided. He is scheduled to return to court on Aug. 1.

Assistant State's Attorney, Michelle Manning said that the victim has been put on a ventilator and the state's attorneys office intend to ratchet up the charges depending upon the man's status.

"At the end, my client could not take the abuse and took matters into his own hands," Biancardi said outside court.

Deadly school lunch: India's free meals program under harsh scrutiny

India's free lunch school program is the largest in the world, and until now, much lauded.

India's much-hailed Mid-Day Meal Scheme, impacting some 120 million children, is credited with having improved the school enrollment and child nutrition levels across the country since its mandatory implementation in 2001. But activists and researchers say the tragedy in a provincial city in Bihar state, some 550 miles from New Delhi, reflects systemic problems with the world?s largest school food program that, if not addressed, could ruin the program that millions depend on.?

"The government has no monitoring system about the quality of food," says Saurabh Sharma of JOSH, a nonprofit in New Delhi that has been lobbying to improve the quality of mid-day meals since it was formed in 2006.

Despite India?s impressive economic growth, it is still home to approximately one third of all malnourished children in the world, according to the United Nations Children?s Fund. While that number is still alarmingly high, the Mid-Day Meal Scheme has made inroads, and millions of poor families depend on it to provide a hot meal for their children. India?s child malnutrition rate fell more than 10 points to 42 percent in nearly a decade, according to a 2012 report.

Today the government announced it would begin a formal inquiry into what led to the deaths of so many children under the age of 12 and sickened dozens of others, including a cook who tasted the meal.

Early reports say traces of insecticide were found in the food, which experts say may have been in the cooking oil or on cooking supplies. Indeed, government officials found insecticide containers alongside the food allotted to the school's headmistress. A key part of the investigation, she is reported to have left the village with her family.

Some say even if the headmistress is found, it?s the distribution system rife with corruption that is to blame. By estimates in 2012, some 40 percent of subsidized food never reaches the intended recipients, according to the New York Times.

?The school principal will blame the private contractor who will blame the government for paying as little as four rupees [6 cents] per meal," says Mr. Sharma.

The incident sparked a flurry of media reports about children falling ill because of mid-day meals across India, highlighting the fact that the tragedy in Bihar is not an isolated incident. In a neighboring district in Bihar state, 60 students had to be hospitalized after eating the school meals; one is reported to be in critical condition.

Economist Reetika Khera, who teaches at the Indian Institute of Technology in New Delhi, says that a survey conducted recently in 10 states showed the program was popular with children and parents alike. But its success varied from state to state depending on how much governments were spending on it and if they had monitoring mechanisms in place.

"Bihar fares poorly in accountability measures and monitoring of the scheme, and this incident will hopefully make the state get its act together," says Ms. Khera, adding?that the increasing role of private players in the program, including contractors, centralized kitchens, and so-called self-help groups is another danger to the program. ?Private entities will only come for profit and are generally happier to cut corners. It also raises issues related to enforcement and accountability ? these contracts often go to those with political connections."

Parents told reporters that some ingredients for the meals were stored at the headmistress's house and brought to the school each day because there was no space to store them at the school. The school?s ?kitchen,? like many school kitchens in rural India, isn't what many Westerners might think of as a kitchen. It's a makeshift area to cook, made out of bricks and situated outside the classroom, according to Reuters.

In an effort to address the issue, the Bihar government has asked all school principals and cooks to first taste the food before serving it to children. The Bihar government says it will construct kitchen storage spaces in schools across the state to address the problem, except for the 13,500 state-run schools that do not even have the land to construct a kitchen shed.?

That may not be enough. A report by India's Human Resource Development ministry had forewarned in March of various problems with the program?s implementation, specifically in Bihar. The report had said the food was of bad quality and cooked in unhygienic conditions, adding that children and parents were unhappy.

I've found low-to-no carb diets extremely effective for weight loss, but never noticed any effects on my social skills.

I find Chamomile capsules are good for some social anxiety, though the effect is mild, it does help, without making you feel stoned.

It'll do that for like a week or two.

Now I eat like 300-400g of carbs a day and life is OK.

The Complete Visual History of Wolverine's Suit

Oh, that yellow spandex with beautiful blue trunks. As classic as that suit was, I have no beef with Wolverine's badassery tossing that away in the movies (plus, with a body like Hugh Jackman's...). But still, it's nice to see the Wolverine we all loved as a child again. Here's the full history of all the suits that Wolverine has ever worn.

Twitter dare results in fan running on field at All-Star Game, subsequent tackle by security

NYC PAPERS OUT. Social media use restricted to low res file max 184 x 128 pixels and 72 dpi

Robert Sabo/New York Daily News

Dylan McCue-Masone -- identified on Twitter as ?@MasoneDylan? -- runs on the field after a Twitter dare and is taken down hard by Citi Field security.

A Twitter dare turned into a body slam for one fan at the All-Star Game at Citi Field Tuesday night.

Twitter user @MasoneDylan, later identified as Dylan McCue-Masone of Shirley, L.I., 18, was live tweeting at the All-Star Game, then put it out there if he got 1,000 retweets, he would run on the field during the game.

?1000 RTs and ill run across the field.. #ASG #CitiField? read the original tweet at 7:44 p.m.

Over 1,000 retweets later, the kid decided to go for it. He was taken down near second base with a textbook tackle by a Citi Field security guard. He was charged with interfering with a professional sporting event.

Photographers at the game captured the moment, which was not shown on the Fox broadcast.

At the game, Mets fan Brendan Lane witnessed the whole thing.

?No one, including the security guards, seemed to notice him until he reached the left fielder,? said Lane, who lives in Queens. ?They used to not put guys on TV, but I guess now you can bypass that with Twitter and all of that. Interestingly, they put a security guard there in the aisle now, like this area is now prone to people running on the field.

?People were laughing (when he was on the field) and the climax was when the guy tackles him, aggressively. He tackled him like he had been waiting a long time to tackle someone,? Lane said.

Earlier in the night, McCue-Masone was making fun of Tom Seaver on Twitter, posting ?TOM SEAVER THROWS LIKE MY LIL SISTER?.

His Twitter account reads like a play-by-play of his attempt ? and immediate regret.

At 9:07 he tweeted ?lmao this is gonna be terrible? then ?i hate all of you? followed by a tweet saying ?WHO SNITCHED?!? with a screenshot of a text from his mother begging him not to run on the field. Updates like ?next inning? and ?im going for 2nd? followed.

His final tweet of the night came at 9:36 p.m. It was a picture of the fence along the left field stands. It simply said ?AHHH?.

US: 15 high-risk diplomatic posts need upgrade

(AP) ? State Department officials say 15 high-risk U.S. diplomatic facilities must be upgraded or replaced to prevent any Benghazi-like attack in the future.

Diplomatic security chief Gregory Starr says problems include improper blast walls and insufficient setback from public streets.

He and Bill Miller, the department's point-man for high-risk posts, are testifying before a Senate panel to defend a $2.2 billion request for embassy security funding in 2014.

They cited some progress worldwide, including approval for a new Beirut embassy after 30 years of effort.

Republican Sen. Bob Corker of Tennessee questioned part of the department's response to last year's deadly attack in Libya.

He challenged plans for a new security training center. And he expressed disappointment with the paid leave given to four employees faulted for wrongdoing on Benghazi.

Monster hail storm causes major damage in Irricana, Alberta, Canada

Residents of Irricana, are cleaning up after a monster thunderstorm rolled through town July 6, leaving more than a foot of hail in its wake.

Life-long residents are stunned as photos and stories emerge of the devastation of the storm.

"Never in all my years," David Butters, resident of Irricana since 1974 said, while showing off the flooding and destruction along First Street. "I've never seen anything like this."

He's not the only one.

"It was unreal," said Frank Dusome, owner of Irricana Collision. "The front door (of the business) is an out-swinging door and I couldn't get out because of the foot of hail."

Remanence of the hail could still be found along First Ave, as of July 8.

Dusome had to resort to climbing outside through a back window and over his back gate, to shovel the hail in order to open his front door.

"It's the worst I've seen and I've been here 12 years," Dusome said.

The hail wasn't the only headache for the town of nearly 1,200, residents along First Street are coping with flooded backyards and basements.

Darwin Powell, a 13-year resident of Irricana, was enjoying a summer's afternoon in his backyard when the storm hit.

"I had a small fire (in the fire pit) and the storm knocked that out in minutes," he recalled. "The hail had such force behind it that it took out all my plants."

Entire rows of plants along his shed have been destroyed, as have his trees and backyard - which has submerged under nearly a foot of water on July 8.

Powell said he is grateful he doesn't have a basement to his house because the amount of water running through his property could have settled in a basement.

Butters wasn't so lucky, his basement is holding the remaining flood water.

He's tried to pump the water out, but insists that it only makes the problem worse, as the water will start to come back in, due to poor drainage in the town.

There is no official tally of hail that fell on July 6 as Environment Canada weather stations cannot track the amount in the community.

However, Bill McMurty, meteorologist with Environment Canada, said it was an "impressive" weather system.

"It was an extensive amount of hail," he said. "A line of slow-moving thunderstorms moved into the area, which means they can produce a lot of weather element, and that's what happened."

The amount of precipitation that fell and the amount of time the hail lasted, is rare, McMurty said.

The storm, which raged from the northwest and held Irricana captive for two-hours, flattened farmers fields as well.

"Of what is left, it's all stubble,"

Dusome said of local crops.

The Town's vegetation, took the hardest hit, as is evident in resident Lorna Fraser's vegetable garden on First Street.

Whole rows of peas, onions, beans, beets, potatoes, raspberries and dill were demolished, and the garden is a virtual right off.

Fallen trees, narrowly missing homes, crashed to the ground, and left residents cleaning up the mess.

The town's beautification efforts were also lost, as planters that were placed for decoration in the up coming Summer Fair celebrations July 12 and 13, were destroyed.

While the town is cleaning up out of the mess, residents agree they are thankful no one was injured.

According to Airdrie RCMP Cst. Templeman, there were no weather-related accidents reported on local roads on July 6. However, she said officers attended a number of home and business security alarms triggered by the storm.

Pakistani Taliban: 'We sent hundreds of fighters' to Syria

By Mushtaq Yusufzai, Producer, NBC News

PESHAWAR, Pakistan -- Leaders of the Pakistani Taliban claim to have sent ?hundreds of fighters? to Syria to support local mujahideen forces in their struggle against President Bashar Assad.

Senior commanders in the militant Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan, a group considered close to al-Qaeda, said they were sending fighters on the request of their ?Arab friends.?

"When our Muslim brothers sought our help, we sent hundreds of fighters to fight alongside their Arab friends,? a senior Tehrik-e-Taliban?commander said Sunday, on the condition of anonymity.

"We will soon issue videos of our fighters winning goods and properties of the enemy in Syria,? he added.

Another commander for the group, that is known to host foreign militants in the lawless tribal regions of Pakistan and Afghanistan, said that they were bound to help because Syrian fighters had supported them in Pakistan.

?We have established our own camps in Syria, but some of our people go and then return after spending some time fighting there,? he added. ?

The militant group is led by?Hakimullah Mahsud ? who the FBI offered a $5 million reward for on their? Most Wanted Terrorist?list.

A look back at the conflict that has overtaken the country.

However, senior Pakistani government and military authorities challenged the group's claims.?

"How can they claim to be sending fighters to Syria when they failed to resist Pakistani security forces and surrendered their strongholds in the tribal areas," a senior military official in Peshawar said.

He added that they wanted to get international attention.

Their claims come as an increasing number of foreign fighters enter the two-year-old conflict that has killed more than 90,000 people, according to the United Nations.

Guerrillas from the Lebanese Shiite group Hezbollah have recently helped forces loyal to Assad recapture important regions in central Syria.

Troops backed by tanks and artillery also moved into a rebel-held district of Damascus on Monday, stepping up efforts to drive opposition fighters from the capital and build on battlefield gains elsewhere in the country, a rebel commander told NBC News.?

'Brown ocean' can fuel inland tropical cyclones

[unable to retrieve full-text content]In the summer of 2007, Tropical Storm Erin stumped meteorologists. Most tropical cyclones dissipate after making landfall, weakened by everything from friction and wind shear to loss of the ocean as a source of heat energy. Not Erin. The storm intensified as it tracked through Texas. Erin is an example of a newly defined type of inland tropical cyclone that maintains or increases strength after landfall. Storms in the newly defined category derive their energy from the evaporation of abundant soil moisture -- a phenomenon that experts call the "brown ocean."

More U.S. Kids May Be at Risk for High Blood Pressure ... - Health.com

By Steven Reinberg
HealthDay Reporter

MONDAY, July 15 (HealthDay News) ? The risk for high blood pressure in American teens and children increased 27 percent over 13 years, a new study finds, as waistlines thickened and kids consumed more salt in their diets.

?High blood pressure is the predominant risk factor for stroke, and stroke rates have been rising in children in the U.S. over recent years,? said Dr. David Katz, director of the Yale University Prevention Research Center. He was not involved with the study.

Harvard researchers collected data on more than 3,200 children aged 8 to 17 who took part in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey from 1988 to 1994, comparing them to more than 8,300 kids in the same survey from 1999 to 2008.

Although children in the study had elevated blood pressure, they could not be classified as hypertensive, because readings must be high three times in a row to make that diagnosis, the researchers noted.

As the obesity epidemic continues, doctors are seeing more children with high blood pressure, an expert said.

?Today alone I will see 10 to 15 [patients], mostly teenagers, that are overweight with hypertension,? said Dr. Ana Paredes, a pediatric nephrologist at Miami Children?s Hospital.

The first step in treating these children is to change their diet and increase the amount of exercise they do, Paredes said. ?I give them a plan they can follow,? she said. ?I tell them to try to lose a pound a week.?

Paredes also counsels her patients to reduce the salt in their diet. Much of the salt that children consume comes from processed foods and drinks like sodas, she said. ?If you are drinking Gatorade while watching TV or working on the computer, you?re just intoxicating yourself with salt,? she said.

Katz said that the new study adds to the weight of evidence that sodium intake affects blood pressure in children as well as adults.

?The pathway from increased sodium intake to elevated blood pressure to rising incidence of stroke is cause for both concern and corrective action,? Katz said.

Americans eat an average 3,400 milligrams (mg) of salt every day ? that?s more than twice the American Heart Association?s recommendation of 1,500 mg or less. Two-thirds of the salt is from processed foods and restaurant meals.

The association between body-mass index ? a measure of body fat ? and blood pressure is even stronger than the association with sodium, Katz noted. ?As obesity rates rise in our kids, so, too, does their blood pressure,? Katz said.

The high salt content of processed food is correctable as are the influences making children obese, he said. ?If we needed another reason to take action, this study provides one. As our kids? blood pressure rises, so does the pressure on us all to do what?s necessary to put a stop to these trends.?

For adults, normal blood pressure is considered to be less than 120/80 mm Hg. Among children and teens, however, normal blood pressure varies by age, sex and height, the researchers noted.

In calculating risk for high blood pressure, they took into account differences between the two groups of kids in terms of age, sex, race/ethnicity, body mass, waistline size and salt intake.

Highlights of the study, published online July 15 and in the August print issue of the journal Hypertension, included the following:

  • Although boys were more likely to have elevated blood pressure, the rate increased more rapidly in girls.
  • Over time, more children were overweight and had bigger waistlines ? especially girls.
  • Children with the biggest waistlines were about twice as likely to have high blood pressure, compared to the children with the thinnest waistlines.
  • Black children had a 28 percent higher risk of high blood pressure than white children.
  • Children who consumed the most salt were 36 percent more likely to have high blood pressure, compared to children who consumed the least.
  • In both studies, more than 80 percent of children had a daily salt intake of more than 2,300 mg. However, fewer children in the later study had an intake above 3,450 mg.

?Everyone expects sodium intake will continue to go up,? lead researcher Bernard Rosner, a professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School, said in a statement. ?It seems there?s been a little bit of listening to dietary recommendations, but not a lot.?

?High blood pressure is dangerous in part because many people don?t know they have it,? he added. ?It?s a very sneaky thing. Blood pressure has to be measured regularly to keep on top of it.?

High blood pressure accounts for some 350,000 preventable deaths each year in the United States, the researchers noted.

Rallies, marches follow Zimmerman verdict

NEW YORK (AP) ? Thousands of demonstrators from across the country ? chanting, praying and even fighting tears ? protested a jury's decision to clear George Zimmerman in the shooting death of an unarmed black teenager while the Justice Department considered whether to file criminal civil rights charges.

Rallies on Sunday were largely peaceful as demonstrators voiced their support for 17-year-old Trayvon Martin's family ? and decried Zimmerman's not guilty verdict as a miscarriage of justice. A march in Los Angeles had minor unrest when a group threw rocks and batteries at police.

The NAACP and protesters called for federal civil rights charges against Zimmerman, a neighborhood watch volunteer who was acquitted Saturday in Martin's February 2012 shooting death.

The Justice Department said it is looking into the case to determine whether federal prosecutors should file criminal civil rights charges now that Zimmerman has been acquitted in the state case. The department opened an investigation into Martin's death last year but stepped aside to allow the state prosecution to proceed.

The evidence generated during the federal probe is still being evaluated by the criminal section of the Justice Department's civil rights division, the FBI and the U.S. Attorney's office for the Middle District of Florida, along with evidence and testimony from the state trial, the Justice Department said in a statement.

Meanwhile, President Barack Obama and religious and civil rights leaders urged calm in hopes of ensuring peaceful demonstrations following a case that became an emotional flash point.

Sunday's demonstrations, held in cities from Florida to Wisconsin, attracted anywhere from a few dozen people to a more than a thousand.

At a march and rally in downtown Chicago attended by about 200 people, some said the verdict was symbolic of lingering racism in the United States. Seventy-three-year-old Maya Miller said the case reminded her of the 1955 slaying of Emmitt Till, a 14-year-old from Chicago who was murdered by a group of white men while visiting Mississippi. Till's killing galvanized the civil rights movement.

"Fifty-eight years and nothing's changed," Miller said, pausing to join a chant for "Justice for Trayvon, not one more."

In New York City, hundreds of protesters marched into Times Square Sunday night, zigzagging through Manhattan's streets to avoid police lines. Sign-carrying marchers thronged the busy intersection, chanting "Justice for! Trayvon Martin!" as they made their way from Union Square, blocking traffic for more than an hour before moving on.

In San Francisco and Los Angeles ? where an earlier protest was dispersed with beanbag rounds ? police closed streets as protesters marched Sunday to condemn Zimmerman's acquittal.

Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti urged protesters to "practice peace" after the rock- and bottle-throwing incident. Police arrested one man.

Rand Powdrill, 41, of San Leandro, said he came to the San Francisco march with about 400 others to "protest the execution of an innocent black teenager."

"If our voices can't be heard, then this is just going to keep going on," he said.

Earlier, at Manhattan's Middle Collegiate Church, many congregants wore hooded sweatshirts ? the same thing Martin was wearing the night he was shot ? in a show of solidarity. Hoodie-clad Jessica Nacinovich said she could only feel disappointment and sadness over the verdict.

"I'm sure jurors did what they felt was right in accordance with the law but maybe the law is wrong, maybe society is wrong; there's a lot that needs fixing," she said.

At a youth service in Sanford, Fla., where the trial was held, teens wearing shirts displaying Martin's picture wiped away tears during a sermon at the St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church.

Protesters also gathered in Atlanta, Miami, Milwaukee, Philadelphia, and Washington, D.C., along with a host of other cities.

In Miami, more than 200 people gathered for a vigil. "You can't justify murder," read one poster. Another read "Don't worry about more riots. Worry about more Zimmermans."

Carol Reitner, 76, of Miami, said she heard about the vigil through an announcement at her church Sunday morning. "I was really devastated. It's really hard to believe that someone can take the life of someone else and walk out of court free," she said.

In Philadelphia, about 700 protesters marched from LOVE Park to the Liberty Bell, alternating between chanting Trayvon Martin's name and "No justice, no peace!"

"We hope this will begin a movement to end discrimination against young black men," said Johnathan Cooper, one of the protest's organizers. "And also to empower black people and get them involved in the system."

In Atlanta, a crowd of about 75 protesters chanted and carried signs near Centennial Olympic Park.

"I came out today because a great deal of injustice has been done and I'm very disappointed at our justice system; I'm just disappointed in America," Tabatha Holley, 19, of Atlanta said.

Civil rights leaders, including the Revs. Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton, urged peace in the wake of the verdict. Jackson said the legal system "failed justice," but violence isn't the answer.

But not all the protesters heeded those calls immediately after the verdict.

In Oakland, Calif., during protests that began late Saturday night some angry demonstrators broke windows, burned U.S. flags and started street fires. Some marchers also vandalized a police squad car and used spray paint to scrawl anti-police graffiti on roads and Alameda County's Davidson courthouse.

In Los Angeles, police said a crowd of about 100 protesters surrounded an officer and eventually had to be dispersed by officers firing beanbag rounds.

Analysis: Sting in dragon's tail for foreign companies in China

By Sujata Rao

LONDON (Reuters) - China's vast market for foreign goods and services, once seen by global companies as a modern-day El Dorado, is becoming a weight around their necks as its growth slows.

The rise of the Chinese economic "dragon" over the last two decades has transformed international business. But now the country is in the grip of a slowdown due to a slump in exports and banking sector excesses, as recent data has shown.

That has led fund managers worldwide to re-assess their investments in companies with a focus on the world's No.2 economy.

"Anything China-sensitive is performing poorly and the trend will not go away because there is no sign of growth recovery," said Maarten-Jan Bakkum, investment strategist at ING Investment Management, which has cut its holdings of China-exposed stocks.

Markets are already braced for slower commodity demand. But Beijing's recent moves, from an anti-corruption drive that has dented luxury demand to a crackdown on shadow banking, will hurt domestic demand too, Bakkum said.

Indeed, investors fear a full-blown banking crunch that could derail credit and consumption growth for years more than they fear sub-7 percent economic growth.

"Even if part of the China fears is correct, consumption will also be hit," he added.

MSCI's China Exposure Index, made up of about 50 companies that derive a significant portion of revenues from China, has fallen around 10 percent this year. Two-thirds of the losses have come in the past quarter with the darkening growth outlook.

In contrast, a similar MSCI list of stocks with exposure to developed economies has gained over 12 percent in 2013, trading off the improving outlook for the West and Japan.

Amit Lodha, portfolio manager of the Fidelity Global Real Assets Securities fund, said he favors stocks such as Volkswagen, whose China exposure is effectively hedged by its sales back to a recovering Europe.

The German carmaker's luxury division, Bentley, this month reported a 23 percent fall in Chinese sales while U.S. and European deliveries rose 12-22 percent.

"Over the longer term, consumption growth in emerging markets like China remains the theme to play. Nearer term, with some resurgence in the United States and signs of bottoming in Europe it would be better to focus on names which have exposure to growth here," Lodha said.

SEMICONDUCTORS AND CEMENT

For two decades China's 10 percent-a-year growth rates allowed foreign companies to enjoy fat profits and surging share prices. Its multi-trillion dollar infrastructure projects sucked in commodities from Brazil and Russia, as well as semiconductors and construction equipment from Germany and the United States.

Companies selling cars, clothing and cosmetics meanwhile benefited from the growing wealth of China's 1.2 billion people, whose per capita incomes have quadrupled since 2000.

China directly accounts for 5-6 percent of U.S. and European company earnings, banks reckon. The indirect share, due to Beijing's influence on commodity prices, is probably far bigger.

It economic slowdown has already hit commodities trade.

"We are not interested in investing in companies that have exposure to commodities and raw materials, goods that China has historically stockpiled. At the end of the day there is a clear reduction of demand from China," said David Bailin, global head of managed investments at Citi Private Bank.

Consumer plays may have more traction, he says.

Consumption makes up just 35 percent of China's economy, almost half the level in neighboring India. And with 300 million-plus people deemed to be part of the middle class, the bet is that smartphones and designer gear will not lack buyers.

But prosperity and employment in China are still closely tied to trade. So the export slump along with rising inflation and higher borrowing costs caused by the crackdown on so-called shadow banking may already be biting into disposable income.

Take Swiss watch exports. These fell 25 percent in the first quarter of 2013. Sales to Hong Kong, where many Chinese shop to avoid import duties, fell 9 percent.

European luxury firms, chipmakers, energy and auto companies all derive over a tenth of their revenues from China, according to Morgan Stanley, which advised clients in a note last week to "be wary of China and emerging markets exposure".

Roughly 5 percent of U.S. earnings come from China but for some, such as restaurant chain Yum, owner of Pizza Hut and KFC, the figure is as high as 50 percent, Deutsche Bank data shows.

So a slower China is bad for company earnings and for emerging markets who rely on its custom.

But the implications stretch further still - right to the heart of the euro zone's economic recovery, says Dan Morris, global strategist at JPMorgan Asset Management.

"If you think how well Germany's economy did during the (euro) crisis and if you look at the numbers, a lot of it was down to exports - and most of that was exports to China," Morris said. "Now that we are not getting any more Chinese stimulus, German growth rates are looking the same as everyone else's."

ISS urges vote against four McKesson directors over CEO pay

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Proxy advisory firm Institutional Shareholder Services (ISS) is urging shareholders of McKesson Corp to vote against the re-election of four directors, citing the firm's persistent problems in addressing shareholders' concerns about executive compensation.

Chief among the concerns was "the sizable and growing" lump-sum pension payment due to Chairman and CEO John Hammergren had he retired, which was worth some $159 million, ISS said.

The ISS recommendation follows criticism of the San Francisco-based healthcare technologies and drug distribution firm by CtW Investment Group. CtW Investment is part of the Change to Win labor federation, whose members include pensions funds that are McKesson shareholders.

McKesson said its governance and executive compensation structure helped drive its strong performance.

"Our board continues to listen and be responsive to shareholder input, and we have made a number of significant governance and compensation changes in direct response to input from our shareholders," McKesson said in a statement.

In a July 1 letter to McKesson shareholders, CtW said McKesson's board is "entrenched and insular" and noted a "string of multi-billion dollar compliance and internal control failures under the watch of the audit committee".

CtW Investment Group also urged McKesson shareholders to vote against the re-election of directors Jane Shaw, a 21-year veteran of the board; Alton Irby, a 14-year veteran of the compensation committee as well as Hammergren.

In its recommendation, ISS said shareholders should vote against Irby and three other members of the compensation committee - Edward Mueller, Christine Jacobs and David Lawrence - for failing to address the compensation issues.

"The fact is the CEO's lump sum pension balance represents substantial lifetime costs to shareholders and does not incentivize the CEO's retention," ISS said.

ISS did not recommend the removal of Shaw. It also did not recommend voting against Hammergren because the company has agreed to name a lead independent director.

ISS representatives did not return requests for comment Sunday evening.

The ISS recommendations were first reported by The Wall Street Journal.

McKesson's shareholders are scheduled to vote at the company's July 31 annual shareholder meeting.

Will American Owners Eventually Rip The Soul Out Of English Football?

god bless america Will American Owners Eventually Rip The Soul Out Of English Football?

While I find David Conn?s alarmist piece in today?s Guardian excessively xenophobic and reactionary, the continued buying of English football clubs by American owners does pose larger questions long term.

Having bought teams that had this most previous season just avoided relegation, Randy Lerner (Aston Villa) and Ellis Short (Sunderland) have seen their sides continue to fight relegation despite large financial outlays on players. Lerner?s initial spending saw Villa climb from 17th to 11th to 6th in three successive seasons, but difficult times have since befallen the Birmingham based club.

Given the background of the likes of Stan Kroenke and Malcolm Glazer, both of whom can be reputed as owners looking to making money off their investments in English institutions, will we soon see a closed league in England based on the model of Major League Soccer?

While I doubt we will ever see a single division without promotion/relegation, I can clearly see American owners, who have been beneficiaries of crony capitalism at home, putting in place a system that mitigates risk.

This would include cost controls on spending, possibly involving salary guidelines (not caps), a luxury tax and a league closed after 44 teams, allowing for promotion and relegation among the top two divisions of English football but not beyond. Once more American owners gravitate to the sport, these controls will be pushed and likely implemented.

I disagree with Conn and the general fear of capitalism and investment represented on the pages of the Guardian regularly when it applies to English football. Investment in the sport is a positive particularly when so few British billionaires are community minded enough to invest in the sport. Most football clubs that have failed recently have been due to domestic ownership and greed among upper-class Brits, skimming money off the top on clubs and not soundly investing in the future.

One need not look any farther than the recent debacle at Coventry City, one of the great English clubs of the period between 1970 and 2000 to see where domestic ownership has failed.

But where I see Conn?s logic is that American owners are fundamentally more dangerous to English institutions than those from Malaysia, Russia or Abu Dhabi who have enough understanding of football as a global game and entity to respect its traditions.

Americans have created their own peculiar though more financially viable set of rules governing sport in this country. These American owners do not understand soccer in the way others around the globe do. They at least ostensibly do not care for its traditions and history.

The growing trend of American ownership is a threat to the traditions of the English game, make no mistake about it. ?The question is how and when will the Americans strike to change the rules and structure of the game in England. ?Sentiment would dictate that we would hope those who love soccer and love the English game will win out when this inevitable battle occurs. ?However, business sense may actually mean the American model or some hybrid of the two will ensure the continued success and survival of the English club game.

Baseball: Slammers rally for 6-5 victory over Rockford Aviators

Updated: July 12, 2013 10:46PM

The Frontier League All-Star break is next week, but the Joliet Slammers passed the midpoint of their 96-game schedule with a bang.

A fireworks night crowd of 3,553, third-largest of the season at Silver Cross Field, saw the Slammers rally from a 5-1 deficit Friday and start the second half of the season with a 6-5 win in the series opener against Rockford.

Joliet trailed 5-2 when it put together a four-run seventh inning, including a game-tying RBI single by David Christensen and an infield single by Kyle Maunus that scored Christensen with the go-ahead run on a throwing error.

Niko Vasquez and league All-Star Marquis Riley (3-for-5) also singled and scored in the inning.

Solid relief pitching from winner Chase Doremus (4 innings, 0 runs, 9 strikeouts) and Brett Zawacki set up closer Justin Erasmus, who pitched the ninth for his 12th save.

Erasmus came into the game tied for second in the league in saves, including Joliet?s three previous victories.

?There?s nobody better in this league,?? Slammers manager Mike Breyman said. ?He?s that guy you can hand the ball off to in the ninth inning and you?re pretty certain the game is over. ... He?s been fantastic for us.??

West Division rival Rockford (15-33) has the worst record in the league, but the Aviators were able to take two of three from Joliet (21-28) last month in Rockford.

?This is one of the series we need to do well,?? Breyman said. ?We?ve won the last three out of four series. We?ve played good baseball. We just had a three-game stint at Southern Illinois where we flat out did not show up.??

Rockford?s offense showed up in the second inning with a five-hit barrage against Slammers starter Chuck Lofgren that produced a 3-1 lead. Lofgren lasted into the fourth inning, allowing nine hits and five runs (four earned).

Michael Wing?s RBI double in the first scored Riley to put Joliet ahead 1-0. Wing leads the team with 27 RBI.

Christensen?s third home run of the season made it 5-2 in the fourth.

Joliet?s team batting average (.227) had dropped to the bottom of the league going into the three-game series.

Ottawa native Corey Kimes (3-4, 4.80 ERA) starts the second game for Joliet at 6:05 p.m. Saturday and Shawn Kale (2-2, 2.84 ERA) is scheduled to start Sunday?s 2:05 p.m. game, the last one before the four-day All-Star break.

LG working on first Windows Phone 8 device, hasn't decided to release it though

1. PapaSmurf posted on 1 hour ago 1

I'm pretty sure when WP8 supports 1080p screen res. and Snapdragon 600, LG is going to jump ship and make a WP8 flagship phone. In terms of competing with Nokia, if they can take the camera from their new rumored device and challenge them, I think they'll have a fair shot in the WP8 world.

3. MichaelHeller posted on 56 min ago 0

That is expected with Windows Phone 8 GDR3, which should be out later this year.

7. PapaSmurf posted on 44 min ago 0

I know, which is why I'm curious to see how everything will plan out in Q3 and Q4.

5. PapaSmurf posted on 45 min ago 0

But it's a fact. Nokia dominates WP8 as Samsung dominates Android.

So they release a LG WP8, don't market it, don't aggressively price it making the LG flop against the barrage of Nokia's. LG will just say there is no demand for WP8 and call it a day.
