Green Initiatives For Home Improvement and Home Construction

With the rising call for eco-friendly initiatives, more and more homeowners today are getting conscious of the demands of their houses appliances, heating and cooling system, energy consumption, carbon footprint, etc. Thus, they search for more eco-friendly alternatives that can help for sustainable living. In this entry, we will look at some of the most popular green initiatives and home-efficiency tips that can suit to almost any budget, whether its for home construction plan or renovation plan.

1. Knowing the Energy Weak Points of Your Home

Whether you choose to hire a contractor or you do home renovations yourself, it is always good to start with an energy audit of your house. This can be done by thorough inspection where professionals checks for air leaks, combined energy consumption of your home appliances, electrical system, etc. Professionals can pinpoint energy weak points of your house and how much theyre costing you in your monthly bills, and of course, suggest for changes and improvements to address the problems.

2. Controlled Airflow

Outlines and tiny spaces around your doors and windows can cause tremendous waste of your energy consumption. United States Department of Energy estimated that, about 20% of your energy spent in heating or cooling goes to waste, as air literally creeps out through the doors and windows. This problem is quite common in old-houses because of ill-fitted and worn-out doors and windows that can easily warm or cool air to leak into or out of the house.

Your best bet is to repair these leaks with various home improvement tools and methods. Using something as simple as draft-catcher placed under the door can easily seal and control airflow. Addressing this problem is relatively easy, and there are tons of DIY stuff available in home improvement stores for this.

3. Insulation

Blown fill insulation, batting and rigid sheets can definitely provide significant benefits for energy-conscious homeowners, as these insulation materials can avert heat transfer from materials in your house, namely drywall, masonry and wood. You can easily find this stuff in your nearest home improvement DIY shops and install these padding to avoid inside the walls and other energy-consuming drafts and crawlspaces.

4. Develop a Low-impact Lawn

Consider every typical home yard equipment most home owners use; lawn mowers and string trimmers, all these things produce harmful emissions. Also, many fertilizers and pesticides use to grow bountiful gardens can leach into the groundwater, causing water pollution that can easily affect the quality of the water that pours out from your faucets. In addition, badly managed runoff water can easily fill your sewers.

Your best bet for a low-impact lawn is to grow native plants as ground cover, rather than baggy grass seeds. You can also change your landscape from and fit it to your lawn with layers of wild flowers rather than filling it up with rare ornamental plants. This will help you put your lawns water consumption and chemical fertilizers use in minimum. For maintaining your lawn, you can opt for manual lawnmower or electric lawnmower rather than gas-powered machines. You can also cool the temperature of your lawn and protect your house from the harsh solar heating in summer days by strategically placing shade trees.

Whether youre hiring a professional construction company for your home building or renovation needs, it is always better to tell them your eco-friendly needs right at the planning of the construction. This will help you protect your environment and save you from expensive monthly electricity and water bills.

A seat at history's counter in Greensboro, N.C.

The Woolworth lunch counter where students protested against desegregation in 1960 recently became the International Civil Rights Center & Museum.

? A local, slice-of-life story from a Monitor correspondent.

It all started here at the Woolworth lunch counter. But this cradle of student protests against desegregation in Greensboro, N.C., was not always given the same stature as the civil rights movement landmarks of Memphis, Tenn., and Selma and Montgomery, Ala., when historians described the sea change that shaped the new South.

But 50 years after the Feb. 1, 1960, sit-in, the site was rechristened in 2010 as the International Civil Rights Center & Museum, securing a place in history for the African-American college students, ?the Greensboro Four,? who refused to cede their seats at the whites-only counter.??

?I?m proud of the museum,? says Greensboro resident Ian Pawlowski, a 30-something who grew up when the city was still reeling from deadly Ku Klux Klan shootings. His family fought on both sides of the Civil War, but Mr. Pawlowski says that today the city is demographically and culturally mixed.

The Significance Of Prevention In Getting Shot Of Heartworm - Pet ...

Heartworm infection can overmaster your dog and the effects can be fatal. As with many medical Problems in your dog, prevention is definitely better than cure. Heartworm prevention with respect to dogs is not just low risk and simple to give, it is essential to the fitness and health of your animal as well as great deal cheaper compared to trying to start treating your pet dog when it has ended up bothered with worms which have matured into adultness.

Protection is really simple enough - however you have to follow the suggestions your vet will give you and also depend on this in opposition to plenty of the rather dubious and overtly, scare-mongering concepts that are found on a few web sites. It really isn't safe - and in reality, it is not legal, to get Ivermectin online which is really reserved for the treating of huge animals to try to look after your pet dog without prescription. Numerous web sites that are advising giving pet dogs medicines got in this way are at best reckless and at worst, nearly criminal in my personal view because these Ivermectin treatments are made for massive animals and are so much stronger in comparison to those created for pets. It is extremely tricky to deal with the simplest way to water down these into the particular dose. If a mistake is formed with the dilution of the dose, controllable suffering and perhaps loss of life might result.

One can find natural heartworm prevention treatments available. These sorts of herbal treatments will be engineered to eliminate heartworm larvae, stopping them from developing to the adults that create such catastrophic harm. For anyone that is thinking hard about using this strategy of heartworm defensive treatment, talk with a holistic vet rather than trying to treat your dog alone.

All holistic veterinarians will confirm that it's imperative that your family dog is just as healthy as it can be before starting treatment. This is so that it can stay healthy through treatment and avoid being overpowered by an invasion of heartworms. That's the rule that ensures wild dogs - which obviously are going to get a far larger exposure to the mosquitoes that prompt the difficulty than almost any domestic pet - have the power to steer clear of the tragic effects of infestation in much bigger numbers than family pets.

Homeopathic heartworm defensive treatments are also available. These are sometimes given for 1 or 2 days each month, or even on a daily basis. Again, it is sensible to get the steerage of a naturopathic or perhaps holistic veterinary well before beginning on any course of treatment for your pet dog.

Treatment of a dog infected with adult heartworms is possible - however heartworm prevention for dogs is definitely more practical. Treatment isn't just high-priced, but it is unquestionably worrying as well as challenging. It will need a while for the pet dog to improve and in a number of cases even after a recovery, there's very often irreparable damage to the heart. Make sure you consult with your vet and begin a heartworm symptoms prevention treatment schedule for your pet dog promptly.

Govt finds airwaves for possible wireless data

(AP) ? The federal government has identified a large block of airwaves that can be freed to meet growing demand for movies, games and other data-intensive activities on smartphones and other mobile devices.

Wireless and technology companies have been clamoring for more spectrum. The 95 megahertz-wide band identified by the Commerce Department can support at least two new national wireless data networks.

But first, the government will have to find new homes for the agencies currently using that spectrum. That could involve sharing arrangements.

The government could spend as much as $18 billion over 10 years moving current users of the spectrum to new locations on the airwaves. The government said Tuesday that it hopes to make up for it by auctioning that spectrum to companies.

Self-Promotion With A Positive Attitude | Self Improvement Blogs ...

From a really young age, many of us are taught the ?virtues? of self-effacement and false modesty. No person likes a show-off. Do not be a know-it-all. Blow-arduous, bore, and class clown are not appellations that any severe, self-respecting particular person wants to have attached to himself. Maybe its just me and my conservative upbringing, which fits again to the previous English ?stiff higher lip? and all that rot. More than possible, though, it?s not just me. Many individuals are reluctant to talk about themselves, or toot their own horn. They see it as unseemly. There may be ample evidence that temperance with regard to self-promotion is the default mode for a big portion of the population.

However, we are taught by our society to admire individuals with confidence, braveness and a positive attitude. The socially intrepid have a tendency to gain respect and, yes?wealth. Aggressive personalities from P.T. Barnum to Richard Branson are held up as requirements of success. Even ?The Donald? gets grudging admiration from people who do not like him. How many instances have you heard ?Personally, I can?t stand the guy, but you have to admire his chutzpah.? or phrases to that effect.

In case you are a type of people who takes consolation in fitting in, or who facilitates social interplay by using a measure of modesty, stop it proper now (a minimum of in your job looking position). There are situations wherein the only path to survival is blatant self-promotion. The seek for employment is one in every of these situations.

By ?self-promotion? I don?t mean changing into the caricature that your well-that means parents and academics warned you about. You do not need Don King?s hair or a shiny orange zoot suit to make an impression. What I?m speaking about is being unafraid to boldly speak the truth about your accomplishments and your strengths. I?m speaking about the use of a confident demeanor and daring, professional supply to get your message across.

Listed here are some ideas to get you started on the path to a extra daring representation of yourself. Most of it begins with a positive attitude.

Begin by taking a look at your self in a mirror. Look into your eyes and don?t look away. It appears humorous to some, however there are lots of people who may have a way of unease while doing this easy exercise. Get in the behavior of doing that if you cannot confidently do it now.

Make a list of your accomplishments and any experiences of which you are proud. Get downright smug about it. Write down all the things from standing as much as a bully to passing a test or turning into prime producer of the month. Now isn?t the time for modesty. Hold nothing back and get it on paper. Magical issues occur once you get it on paper. Learn it daily? accident insurance until you could have internalized it. Don?t simply write it and overlook it.

Check out your wardrobe. Is there anything that you can do to distinguish yourself from others? You don?t have to go out and purchase a whole new closet full of clothes (especially if your resources could be used for more sensible issues right now). My personal items include a collar pin once I?m carrying a tie, and a pocket silk when carrying a suit or perhaps a sports activities jacket. It is outstanding what number of feedback I?ve obtained, nearly those two little things. Extra importantly although, it is how you start to see yourself. You?ll start to set yourself other than the group in your personal estimation.

Begin to throw round a few of your accomplishments or strengths in informal conversation. Inform individuals what an asset you are. Let everyone know that you simply want to improve a company along with your particular skills. This could be a tough one, since you may have most likely been taught to keep away from that form of thing. Do it anyway just for now. Get comfortable with it.

Give these items a attempt for a month or so. Once you secure employment (and you?ll), they come in useful for development, relationships and enhanced opportunities. In addition they allow you to improve and maintain the positive angle that is so essential for any undertaking. Most everyone can do with a bit extra confidence and refined self presentation; even your obnoxious good friend that thinks he?s higher than everybody (think ?overcompensation?). But that?s a topic for one more time.

How to Get the Information You Need for Your Home Improvement ...

There is a lot of information available about home improvement. From popular television shows to in-depth how-to videos and training manuals, there are a lot of ways to learn how to take on a home improvement project. The question is then, is the information right? Keep reading for suggestions on sources of different home improvement how-to resources as well as info on how to assess its reliability.

Sources of Do-It-Yourself (DIY) Home Improvement Info:

1. Television and DVD

Television is great because it lets you see each step as the project unfolds. However to get the most out of a video how-to experience, your best bet is to actually purchase a specific DVD that relates directly to the project you?re taking on. For example, if you?re planning to install laminate flooring, look for a DVD specifically on how to install laminate flooring, not some other type of flooring.

You can find many of these instructional DVD?s either online or right in your hardware store. Most are hosted by trusted experts or popular home improvement celebrities.

2. Books

How-To books are a great way to build a small home library with a lot of information right at your fingertips. The benefits of a few, well-chosen home improvement books are that they?re always accessible, often well-researched and you can take them with you from project-to-project.

3. Internet

The Internet has millions of pages about home improvement. The problem is finding the right information. Look for reliable sources like trusted web pages or active web communities that self-edit. Look at a web site, including the resource it offers and how updated it is, and ask yourself if you would risk the cost of your home improvement project on its advice.

For specific questions, try forums or message boards where active users can often help you with a number of home improvement conundrums. Remember that unlike a book, you can?t always take the Internet with you, so print off or write down the information you need.

4. Your Local Hardware Store

You?d be amazed by how many questions can get answered at your local hardware store. Ask your store clerk or even fellow handyman and you?ll get all sorts of free advice for your home improvement need.

Finally, despite all the free advice available on DIY home improvement, that doesn?t mean you can get away with never consulting a professional. For major projects, especially those involving your gas or electricity, always consult a qualified professional.

Army sergeant charged in Afghan massacre

FILE - In this Aug. 23, 2011, file photo provided by the Defense Video & Imagery Distribution System, Sgt. Robert Bales takes part in exercises at the National Training Center at Fort Irwin, Calif. It is still not known if Bales, who allegedly massacred 17 Afghans, was ever diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder, but even if he had been that alone would not have prevented him from being sent back to war. The Army diagnosed 76,176 soldiers with PTSD between 2000 and 2011. Many returned to the battlefield after mental health providers determined their treatment worked and their symptoms had gone into remission. The case of Bales has sparked debate about whether the practice needs to be re-examined. (AP) ? Charges filed Friday against Army Staff Sgt. Robert Bales reflect the horror of the crime: 17 counts of premeditated murder, more than half of them children, during a shooting rampage in southern Afghanistan. But while Afghans are calling for swift and severe punishment, it will likely be months, even years, before the public ever sees Bales in a courtroom.

One only has to look at two recent and similarly high-profile cases to see that the wheels of military justice turn slowly.

It's been nearly 29 months since an Army psychiatrist, Maj. Nidal Hasan, allegedly killed 13 and injured two dozen more at Fort Hood, Texas. His trial is scheduled to begin in June. And it's been 21 months since the military charged intelligence analyst Bradley Manning with leaking hundreds of thousands of pages of classified information. It took nine months before he was deemed competent to stand trial.

The Bales case is likely to be equally complex, involving questions of his mental state and the role that the stresses of war and possible previous head injuries may have played in his alleged actions. Most of the eyewitnesses are the Afghan villagers and survivors who may be brought in for the trial.

The military on Friday charged Bales with 17 counts of murder, six counts of attempted murder and six counts of assault in the March 11 pre-dawn massacre in two southern Afghanistan villages near his base. The father of two from Lake Tapps, Wash., was officially informed of the 29 charges just before noon at the U.S. military prison at Fort Leavenworth, Kan., where he is confined.

The maximum punishment for a premeditated murder conviction is death, dishonorable discharge from the armed forces, reduction to the lowest enlisted grade and total forfeiture of pay and allowances, according to Col. Gary Kolb, a spokesman for U.S. forces in Afghanistan. The mandatory minimum sentence is life imprisonment with the chance of parole.

The charges offered few details of what happened that night. But the 38-year-old soldier is accused of walking off his base with his 9mm pistol and M-4 rifle, which was outfitted with a grenade launcher, killing four men, four women, two boys and seven girls and burning some of the bodies. The ages of the children were not disclosed.

In the most detailed descriptions of the shootings to date, the charges say Bales shot a young girl in the head, a young boy in the thigh, a man in the neck and a woman in the chest and groin. The documents also say that he "shot at" another girl and boy, but apparently did not hit them.

The attack occurred in the Panjwai district of Kandahar Province, the spiritual birthplace of the Taliban. The dead bodies were found in Balandi and Alkozai villages ? one north and one south of the base.

Members of the Afghan delegation investigating the killings said one Afghan guard working from midnight to 2 a.m. saw a U.S. soldier return to the base around 1:30 a.m. Another Afghan soldier who replaced the first and worked until 4 a.m. said he saw a U.S. soldier leaving the base at 2:30 a.m. It's unknown whether the Afghan guards saw the same U.S. soldier. If the gunman acted alone, information from the Afghan guards would suggest that he returned to base in between the shooting rampages.

It also is not known whether the suspect used grenades, Kolb said. The grenade launcher attachment is added to the standard issue M-4 rifle for some soldiers but not all, he said. Bales was assigned to provide force protection at the base.

The case against him is the worst allegation of killing of civilians by an American in Afghanistan and has severely strained U.S.-Afghan ties at a critical time in the decade-old war.

The Taliban said they had no faith that the U.S. military court system would bring the shooter to justice. Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid said in an email to The Associated Press that the insurgents themselves would avenge the killings by killing U.S. forces one-by-one.

Not addressed in the charges are suggestions that Bales may have been drinking. On Friday, a senior U.S. defense official said Bales was drinking in the hours before the attack on Afghan villagers, violating a U.S. military order banning alcohol in war zones. The official spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss the charges before they were filed.

U.S. officials, however, have said that additional charges could be filed as time goes on. Bales' civilian attorney, John Henry Browne, said Friday the government will have a hard time proving its case and that his client's mental state will be an important issue. Bales was on his fourth tour of duty, having served three tours in Iraq, where he suffered head and foot injuries.

Meanwhile, an attorney for Bales' wife said the couple have spoken by telephone twice since he was detained. Attorney Lance Rosen said Bales called his wife, Karilyn, first from overseas shortly after the March 11 pre-dawn massacre, then from Fort Leavenworth on Wednesday.

Rosen said Bales and his wife were warned the call Wednesday would be monitored and told they would only have 10 minutes to talk. They talked about family matters and "reaffirmed their love for each other," Rosen said. He also said the family has set up a defense fund to help pay for Bales' legal fees.

The charges set in motion what will likely be a lengthy military justice process.

"Usually in military and civilian criminal cases, delay accrues to the benefit of the accused. So there will be some maneuvering to put it off a while," said Gary Solis, retired Marine prosecutor and adjunct law professor at Georgetown University. "I think it's many months before we're going to see this thing go to trial, if it ever goes to trial."

Bales may face what the military calls a "sanity board," to determine his mental state at the time, and whether he is competent to stand trial.

Since Bales was assigned to a unit based at Joint Base Lewis-McChord in Washington state? the 2nd Battalion, 3rd Infantry Regiment of the 3rd Stryker Brigade Combat Team of the 2nd Infantry Division ? the charges were sent Friday to a special court-martial convening authority, the 17th Fires Brigade, an artillery unit at the post. Lewis-McChord spokesman Lt. Col. Gary Dangerfield said officials at the post will have the legal responsibility of trying and managing the case against Bales, but it was not clear where the proceedings would actually take place.

Maj. Christopher Ophardt at Lewis-McChord said the preliminary hearing may not take place for a few months and it would likely be several more months after that before a trial would begin ? perhaps two years from now depending on motions and other pretrial actions.

Jeffrey Addicott, who previously served as the senior legal adviser to the U.S. Army's Special Forces, said the military justice system typically moves faster than civilian courts. But he said the international political implications may cause this case to drag on for years.

"When we have these high-publicity cases, the military becomes like a deer in the headlights. They have just one speed: extremely slow," Addicott said, adding that he expects the defense team to use all tactics to slow the process.

According to military lawyers and experts, now that the charges have been filed, the next step is for the military is to decide whether there is enough evidence to refer the charges to a preliminary hearing. That hearing, what the military calls an Article 32, would determine whether there's probable cause to believe a crime was committed and that the person charged did it.

Once the Article 32 is over, the hearing officer recommends to a general officer whether or not the case should go to trial. That general officer then decides whether the case should go to a court-martial in front of a military judge.

Throughout the proceedings, the lawyers will be able to file a wide range of motions, including requests for more time to review evidence.

Browne said he thinks the U.S. government will have difficulty proving its case against Bales because "there is no crime scene" and a lack of important physical evidence like fingerprints. And he has said he wants to visit Afghanistan.

Prosecutors, meanwhile, will rely on evidence collected from the villages, including any statements by witnesses and Afghan civilians who were injured that night, as well as any observations by other soldiers about Bales' conduct and his movement on or off the base.

Two military defense attorneys also have been assigned to his case.

Ophardt said Bales' family is still living on base but has the option of moving off at any time.

Beekeepers ask EPA to ban pesticide toxic to bees

Commercial beekeepers and environmental organizations filed a petition Wednesday, asking federal regulators to suspend use of a pesticide they say harms honeybees.

The group is urging the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to ban the insecticide clothianidin, one of a class of chemicals that act on the central nervous system of insects.

Over 1.25 million people also submitted comments in partnership with the organizations, calling on EPA to take action.

Beekeepers and some scientists say the chemicals known as neonicotinoids are lethal to bees and weaken their immune systems, making them more susceptible to pathogens. They say it could contribute to colony collapse disorder, in which all the adult honey bees in a colony suddenly disappear or die.

The disorder continues to decimate hives in the U.S. and overseas. Since it was recognized in 2006, the disease has destroyed colonies at a rate of about 30 percent a year, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Before that, losses were about 15 percent a year from a variety of pests and diseases.

Beekeepers annually replace those hives.

In response to calls for the ban on clothianidin and other neonicotinoids, the EPA is currently conducting a re-evaluation of these pesticides. France, Germany and Italy have limited or banned the use of neonicotinoids.

Bees pollinate about a third of U.S. crops.

California is the nation's main producer of fruits and vegetables. Well over half of the bees from around the country are brought to the state at the end of February for almond pollination.

Study fell short
Beekeepers and environmentalists say the EPA ignored its own requirements and failed to study the impacts of clothianidin on bees. The agency granted a conditional registration to clothianidin in 2003, contingent on the submission of a field study establishing that the pesticide would have no unreasonable adverse effects on pollinators.

The field study was later submitted, but last year the agency found the study poorly designed and deficient. No other studies have been done to replace it, and the agency said pollinator field studies are limited in their utility.

The agency also said it evaluated clothianidin based on 34 scientific studies and that the chemical poses less risk to workers and wildlife than alternatives. While data show clothianidin is toxic to honeybees, the EPA says there's no proven link to bee colony die-offs from exposure to the chemical.

Some researchers disagree. And while no one has been able to determine what causes colony collapse, most researchers point to a combination of factors, including pesticide contamination.

Focus on neonicotinoids
Use of clothianidin and other neonicotinoids is most worrisome, said Jim Frazier, professor of entomology at Penn State University, because the chemicals treat millions of acres of corn and other genetically modified plants throughout the U.S. Data show that the chemicals builds up over time in the soil, plants and trees, he said.

Frazier said studies have shown that clothianidin is toxic to bees. The pollen that bees take back to their colonies contains the chemical, as does the dust that comes off planters.

"The EPA admits that their testing has not been adequate to determine the impact of this chemical on bees and pollinators," Frazier said, adding that while a direct link between clothianidin and colony collapse has not been established, more studies are needed.

Beekeeper Jeff Anderson of California Minnesota Honey Farms, a co-petitioner, said he believes clothianidin is weakening and killing his bees. Every year, he sees more bees die off when he stations them in Minnesota, especially when soy and corn treated with clothianidin are being planted.

"It's a subtle long-term issue," Anderson said. "It's like giving bees AIDS. Their immune systems are down and all the pathogens and viruses become virulent. So the bees succumb much more readily."

In recent years, Anderson said he lost over 30 percent of his bees during the winter and more during the rest of season.

Anderson, who has pollinated California's almonds and cherries for more than 30 years, said he's backing away from cherry pollination because the trees are sprayed with the chemical.

"They do it after we remove the bees, but the trees are retaining the chemical from one season to the next and creating a situation where the bloom is becoming toxic," Anderson said.

Bayer CropScience recently announced the removal of almonds from the pesticide label for imidacloprid ? another neonicotinoid ? in California, thereby eliminating the use of the product in almond orchards, in response to concerns by the scientific community about the product's impacts on honeybees.

Venice hasn't stopped sinking after all

ScienceDaily (Mar. 21, 2012) ? The water flowing through Venice's famous canals laps at buildings a little higher every year -- and not only because of a rising sea level. Although previous studies had found that Venice has stabilized, new measurements indicate that the historic city continues to slowly sink, and even to tilt slightly to the east.

"Venice appears to be continuing to subside, at a rate of about 2 millimeters (.07 inches) a year," said Yehuda Bock, a research geodesist with Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego, and the lead author of the new research paper on the city's downward drift. "It's a small effect, but it's important," he added. Given that sea level is rising in the Venetian lagoon, also at 2 millimeters per year, the slight subsidence doubles the rate at which the heights of surrounding waters are increasing relative to the elevation of the city, he noted. In the next 20 years, if Venice and its immediate surroundings subsided steadily at the current rate, researchers would expect the land to sink up to 80 millimeters (3.2 inches) in that period of time, relative to the sea.

Bock worked with colleagues from the University of Miami in Florida and Italy's Tele-Rilevamento Europa, a company that measures ground deformation, to analyze data collected by GPS and space-borne radar (InSAR) instruments regarding Venice and its lagoon. The GPS measurements provide absolute elevations, while the InSAR data are used to calculate elevations relative to other points. By combining the two datasets from the decade between 2000 and 2010, Bock and his colleagues found that the city of Venice was subsiding on average of 1 to 2 millimeters a year (0.04 to 0.08 inches per year). The patches of land in Venice's lagoon (117 islands in all) are also sinking, they found, with northern sections of the lagoon dropping at a rate of 2 to 3 millimeters (0.08 to 0.12 inches) per year, and the southern lagoon subsiding at 3 to 4 millimeters (0.12 to 0.16 inches) per year.

The findings will be published March 28 in Geochemistry, Geophysics, Geosystems, a journal of the American Geophysical Union.

"Our combined GPS and InSAR analysis clearly captured the movements over the last decade that neither GPS nor InSAR could sense alone" said Shimon Wdowinski, associate research professor of Marine Geology and Geophysics at the University of Miami.

In the new study, using the GPS instruments, Bock and his colleagues were able to take absolute readings of the city and its surrounding lagoons. And not only did they find the sinking, but they found that the area was tilting a bit, about a millimeter or two eastward per year. That means the western part -- where the city of Venice is -- is higher than the eastern sections. Prior satellite analyses didn't pick up on the tilt, Bock said, possibly because the scientists had been taking measurements using InSAR, which only provided the change elevation relative to other sites.

The relative nature of InSAR measurements might also explain why the new study detected Venice's subsidence, while other recent studies did not, Bock conjectured.

Venice's subsidence was recognized as a major issue decades ago, he noted, when scientists realized that pumping groundwater from beneath the city, combined with the ground's compaction from centuries of building, was causing the city to settle. But officials put a stop to the groundwater pumping, and subsequent studies in the 2000s indicated that the subsidence had stopped, he said.

"It's possible that it was stable in that decade, and started subsiding since then, but this is unlikely," Bock said. The current subsidence is due to natural causes, which probably have been affecting the area for a long time.

A significant part of those natural causes are plate tectonics. The Adriatic plate, which includes Venice, subducts beneath the Apennines Mountains and causes the city and its environs to drop slightly in elevation. And although the groundwater pumping has stopped, the compaction of the sediments beneath Venice remains a factor.

The frequency of floods in Venice is increasing, Bock said, and now about four or five times a year residents have to walk on wooden planks to stay above the floodwaters in large parts of the city. A multi-billion-dollar effort to install flood-protection walls that can be raised to block incoming tides is nearing completion, he said. The adjustable barriers were designed to protect the city from tides that are coming in higher as overall sea levels are rising in response to climate change.

To ensure that the gates can hold back sufficient tidal water in the long run, their builders "have to take into account not only the rising of sea level, but also the subsidence," Wdowinski said. The land on which those gates are being built is descending and taking the barriers down with it relative to the rising seas, he said, effectively doubling the amount of elevation change in store for Venice.

The patchy land in the surrounding lagoon could need shoring up as well. Over the next 40 years, the natural barriers that protect the Venice lagoon and city could drop by 150-200 millimeters, Wdowinski said, so officials may need to reinforce those sinking sediments as well.

Q&A from "Long Distance Relationships" - Love Science ...

Wise Readers,

Aren?t Viv and Clark too young to have a solid marriage anyway?? If you?re in a LDR, how can you max your chances for it to work out?? Why is sacrifice a dirty word?? And what are The 4 Types of people who initiate a relationship that?s long distance from the start??

Read on!?

?

From Diane: ??I Have SO Many Questions? (and my own LDR!)?

I have SO many questions brought up by this post. I?m in a LDR myself with no foreseeable end (and it?s not due to our choice but due to our respective employers/vocations. The only way we could be physically together is to quit our jobs, and we?re both in fields where it is very difficult to find work. And we believe a) that both people need to come to the relationship as equal partners and b) that each one of us would be unhappy being unable to use our education and follow the vocational path that we each feel called to.

So first question: what is the research on the success of relationships when one partner has to sacrifice a career in order to be with the other one? (We?re both willing to take less-desirable jobs to be near the other. The fear is for one of us to be unemployed for long periods of time)

Second: how do you survive the ?whiplash? of the joy of seeing each other combined with the pain of re-separating just 2-3 days later?

Third: if we are very careful to discuss (and to argue through!) problem areas in our relationship (e.g., parenting expectations), does that increase our probability of staying together once we are able to reunite?

Fourth: Does the length of time one is in a LDR affect the ability for the couple to a) survive the separation without breaking up midway and b) successfully reunite? [My situation: When we?re finished with the next stage of our careers (2-4 years for each of us), it should be much easier to find employment near each other. While there?s no guarantee, we are very much holding out hope for this]

Finally, and unrelated to my own situation: aren?t Viv and Clark really young? What?s the likelihood of them staying together even if they go to college together? If I were advising them and knew that they were 18 years old, I?d tell them to follow their heart, too ?- but ?follow their heart? to the college that is the best fit, not to follow another person to school. Who wants to follow a boy to school and then break up along with all the other girls in the freshman dorm in October?? And perhaps the people advising Viv/Clark recognize that there are problem areas in their relationship or that one or both of them has a lot of growing up to do? at that point, saying ?It?ll work if it is meant to? might be a kinder statement than ?There?s little chance of this working, so do what?s best for each of you individually.?

?

Duana?s response: ?The #1 Contributor To Most People?s Happiness Is Not A Job, It?s ________________?

Dear Diane,

Thank you for writing. It?s great to hear a new voice, and to get so many cogent questions and observations. I?m going to take them in another order.

Viv and Clark are young, but before I answered this letter publicly I had many exchanges with them. In my opinion, they?ve found the right person for one another, just a bit sooner than most. And they are not just dating?they are engaged, and have been planning a wedding for a year. Whether anyone else believes in their relationship, they have made a marital level of commitment to each other, and married people generally try to work things out favorably for both parties. They have the opportunity to do that?there are abundant colleges with solid programs in both their fields. In that case, I can?t see a reason for them to attend separate schools, nor an argument that either of them is making a significant sacrifice educationally to be together.

My personal bias is that Viv and Clark are young people, but they are still people and deserve to have their commitment taken seriously. I think they are fortunate to have found each other. A lot of us wander around for many years looking for someone trustworthy and compatible. These people are young, but mature; unfortunately, in Viv?s case in particular, she had to grow up really fast. I can?t in good conscience advise them to make a move that puts their love at risk.

(An earlier LoveScience covered how the young who plan to marry can help their chances for success, and here it is:? http://www.lovesciencemedia.com/love-science-media/young-love-young-marriage.html)

I think we as a culture (and perhaps as well-educated readers here) tend to forget something the science knows: Jobs and careers are generally not what make people happiest. Good relationships are. This couple has that. I?d like to see them nurture it *and* pursue their educations. It can be done.

?

Duana?s response, continued: ?Why Sacrifice Is Not A Dirty Word? And What People Really Regret?

Now, Diane, to your more personal questions!

And unfortunately, cutting to the brief answer: I don?t know. The research does not necessarily address your queries, clearly important questions to you and many others, satisfactorily.

But I will make educated guesses and reveal my personal biases.

1. What?s the research on relational success when one person or the other does make a career or educational sacrifice for the other?

I don?t know of any research specifically about that, but I do know of research showing that a focus on a career ahead of a relationship often results in divorce, dissolution, or a major loss of happiness in the couple.

In other words, not making a sacrifice can result in its own version of sacrifice.

I can readily understand your fear that one or the other of you will be unemployed, but I?m heartened to hear you?re mutually willing to take less-desirable jobs to be geographically near.

Because here?s something I don?t get letters about: ?I wish I had not moved to be near my sweetie.? No. I don?t receive that letter. The letter I receive repeatedly is that of a regretful lover who let a past partner slip away: ?I followed advice to go to another university, and she met someone else and married him and I?ve never gotten over losing her.? ?Our lives are both consumed by the affair we?re having; we let each other go when we were young and when we got back in touch, we touched more than hearts.? That sort of letter.

(First loves and young loves are particularly combustible that way, as you can read at my links on young love and first love or rekindled love:

http://www.lovesciencemedia.com/love-science-media/when-first-love-is-true-love-re-igniting-the-old-flame.html

http://www.lovesciencemedia.com/love-science-media/why-not-to-look-up-that-old-flame-on-facebook-or-how-to-wrec.html)

Research on what people regret is informative here, I think. When asked what they regret, people rarely name something they tried but failed at. Instead they name the things they never gave a fair shake?things they really, really wanted but didn?t attempt in any real way.

My guess is that you would not regret finding a way to be geographically near each other, even if one or the other of you were unemployed for a while~*as long as* you?re both utterly committed to one another. If one of you is unsure about the relationship, yes, that could lead to festering resentments. And less than total commitment is generally not a good endorsement for moving, since those who are trying out commitment during a move-in sometimes continue trying it on even after vows. When either person is less than fully committed, it?s bad odds for that relationship, whether or not long distance had ever been involved.

Of course, another option you?ve probably considered is making sure you have employment before you make the move. I?m guessing if it were that easy, though, you would have already done that.

?

But let?s go back to the S word: Sacrifice.

In the big picture, life is about choices?we tend to use the word ?sacrifice? when the choice involves something about a relationship, as if somehow relationships should not place us in the position of requiring choices, or choices made for relationships are automatically suspect.

Yet for everything chosen in life, isn?t there another road not taken? Sacrifice need not be a dirty word, and particularly not as applied to the one thing that really stands people the best shot of happiness. In the end, people who choose relationships over other things (including careers) are usually happiest, given that the relationship was of high quality and worth making a choice in favor of. ?People Over Things? could well be their motto.

Again, though?a lot of times, the choice we?re talking about is not that dire. Achievement and relationships need not be mutually exclusive, and I?m a big advocate of both, using what?s in your own interest as a guide when a choice must be made.? I have a doctorate and did not abandon my career, but I would not take a better position and leave my husband behind, no matter how good the position. It would be contrary to our entire family?s happiness and my own. That?s not a sacrifice, that?s my best interest.

What choice would make *you* happiest? Choosing that is not a sacrifice so much as just a smart move. I?m behind you, whatever is right for you.

?

?

Duana?s response, continued: ?Relationships Need A Lot Of Reward Just To Survive? And Even More Reward To Be Happy?

2. ?how do you survive the ?whiplash? of the joy of seeing each other combined with the pain of re-separating just 2-3 days later??

Diane, I really don?t know. I?ve gotten letters from others who?ve asked that question, and I?ve got no good answer. I think that may just be part of the deal when you really love someone and you?re in a LDR. You could probably tell me more about the experience than I could tell you!

3. ?if we are very careful to discuss (and to argue through!) problem areas in our relationship (e.g., parenting expectations), does that increase our probability of staying together once we are able to reunite??

The research by Laura Stafford (please see references below) is more descriptive than proscriptive. That is, it tells what couples apart are doing, but doesn?t necessarily point out what they should be doing instead. My guess is that couples are avoiding the tough talks for a good reason: because there is *so much stress* involved merely in conducting a LDR and being separated, that adding arguments on top of that could put the relationship into ?not worth it? territory. I think LDR couples are essentially hedging their bets by avoiding the tough discussions and thus building some reward into what could otherwise be a truly unrewarding situation.

And relationships need reward built into them to survive. For instance, John Gottman?sresearch of married couples (who were living together) showed that just to hang on by their fingernails, they had to have five positive interactions for every one negative interaction. To be really happy, though, couples had to have *twenty* positives to one negative!?

Which brings us back to you. LDR?s simply involve a lot less interaction than geographically proximal relationships. If you add negatives, you risk tipping the odds away from success.

Solution? Add the negatives?bring up the difficult subjects?*but also add at least 20 positives for every one of the negatives*. That?s tough to do in a LDR, which I suspect is why few do it. But can it be done? I think so.

And should it be done, to protect you and your partner from the shock of unresolved Stuff when you are together? Again, I think so.

?

Duana?s response (continued): ?Probabilities Aren?t Certainties?

4. ?Does the length of time one is in a LDR affect the ability for the couple to a) survive the separation without breaking up midway and b) successfully reunite??

Longer separations are indeed more difficult and more likely to result in a break-up. But that doesn?t mean it?s impossible to stay together. The research is about probabilities, not certainties. (For certainties, one consults the Magic 8 Ball, lol.)

If you can reduce the time you?re separated; if you can both make a firm decision in favor of the relationship ahead of all other concerns (or if one of you can do so without resenting it); if you can increase your positive interactions and still deal with your emotional Stuff?well, odds get better for the relationship to thrive.

The odds favor those who are geographically near, all things being equal. But plenty of LDR?s do survive even so.

I wish you the very best as you surmount the odds and stay among those success stories.

?

From Thomas Smith: ?A LDR Will Work If You Want It To?

A LDR will work if you want it to, part has to do with how long you were together before the distance got in the way, second is how well you really know each other, by that I mean living habits, sleeping habits eating habits, financial habits? the whole shebang? It?s how dedicated do you want to be together and what goals have you talked about with eachother? I was in an LDR with my high school sweetheart for 2 1/2 years until she graduated high school and then we got married.? We were faithful (so I assume on her part), I know I was the whole time. We had a great marriage until other issues got in the way? not communicating very well on future plans, not enough patience on her part about my maturity, and then she turned into a control freak which I couldn?t handle eventually she left me someone she could control, imo.? But that was also the trouble with being married young which is another topic.? I loved her with everything and fought to save the relationship, but the more I fought to save it the more she wanted away from me?

In my opinion, in a LDR you really need to look down the road and discuss in foresight what you really want in a relationship, what your ideas of it are (please don?t look to reality TV for those, either), and what kind of future you want for yourself and/or him/her, ie: jobs, kids, where to live, by his/her family or yours, how to spend money or save it, personal goals and couple goals, etc.? All of these are important issues. I know that back then staying in constant contact (3,000 miles apart) cost a lot to communicate. Today?s technology almost eliminates the true distance of an LDR because of phones and Internet, there is still a daily contact made even by seeing each other not just by voice? But nothing can replace actual physical time and contact. If you really love this person and communicate this well then I would do it; ?even if it fails then chalk it up to a learning lesson in life. We don?t learn unless we fail sometimes.? Always have faith in your heart.? Better to have loved and lost than never to have loved before and learned from it?

Good Luck
Thomas Smith

?

Duana?s response:

Dear Thomas, thank you so much for adding your voice and your story. You and your former wife must have done a lot of things right for your LDR to have worked so well. There are folks who do, and I?d like to know more about them. I?ll bet they?ve followed your example and counsel to discuss goals, and to put their mutual commitment first.?

Fortunately for Viv and Clark, a separation is not necessary. They get to choose. I can?t advise them to choose a needless separation. But I wish I knew more to say to those who had no choice.

?

From Mr. Corvid: ?Some Rules For A LDR?

Having survived a few of these, I have a some rules regarding LDR, some of which you point out above. I?ve been on both sides of every one of these rules.

1. It is always easier to leave than be left. If you are the one moving away, your days will be filled with new experiences and adjustment. The only change in your partner?s life, however, is the empty void left by your absence.

2. You?ll never truly know whether your partner has cheated on you, or vice-versa. It?s not just trust that has to be solid, you have to be in a place where your relationship can weather infidelity or openness. And then neither of you should ever ask about it. Not many relationships fit this model.

3. A LDR where one partner can leave work at 5 and be in their partner?s bed by midnight has a MUCH stronger chance of surviving than something that takes longer for travel. And, ideally, it should cost no more than a tank of gas.

4. Clear the stinky sock phase first. You should have lived with your partner and made sure that you two were compatible?i.e. can deal with each other?s stinky socks- when the distance disappears down the road. If not, you?re just gambling.

5. Have a sunset clause? LDR?s that are open ended are doomed.

6. The best way to stay out of trouble is to stay out of trouble. You can?t live the way you live normally. We?re mammals, and primates at that, we crave social interaction, including touch. Stay away from events where you are going to be tempted. The longer the LDR, the harder turning down those events will be, and the more tempted you will get.

7. If it is going to be more than a few months, one or both of you is going to lose your shit. Be ready.

8. If one or both of you are prone to addiction or bad personal habits, be warned?it?s those addictions that will fill that void. You?ll tell yourself that the addictive behavior is temporary. I?m looking right at you, person being left behind.

9. If your partner breaks up with you during an LDR, rest assured that it?s not just that the relationship isn?t working, it?s that there?s someone else lined up that they want to pursue, even if they don?t tell you. Let the relationship go.

10. If you are dating someone LDR that you met online, you should seriously consider why you aren?t seeing someone that lives close by. I would argue that, unless you are in a truly rural/remote area, it?s more about you than you not finding a good partner. Whatever ?it? is that is causing the problem will surface immediately upon uniting with this LDR partner.

?

Duana?s response: ?The Types Of People Who Choose LDR?s?

Dear Mr. Corvid,?
Thank you for the insightful, cogent list of how-to?s in the world of LDR?s. I found many to be spot-on and especially liked your contribution that the leave-ee will feel much more at a loss than the leave-er, who will be distracted with new opportunities in a new life.

But there are two points I?d like to clarify a bit.?
Taking your point #4: ?Clear the stinky sock phase first. You should have lived with your partner and made sure that you two were compatible?i.e. can deal with each other?s stinky socks- when the distance disappears down the road. If not, you?re just gambling.?

Although it?s very popular to believe so, it?s clear from numerous studies that living with others is not a requirement for a happy union (You can that article at http://www.lovesciencemedia.com/love-science-media/commitment-or-lack-thereof-the-trouble-with-shacking-up.html ); indeed, people who live together before marriage appear to be gambling more than those who don?t, when you consider the later outcomes in terms of happiness and divorce/failure rates, and Commitment?or lack thereof?is apparently the reason. And in the LDR research, even those who did happily cohabit (married or otherwise) before moving to a LDR weren?t protected by the former closeness.

And your point #10 intrigued me as well: ?If you are dating someone LDR that you met online, you should seriously consider why you aren?t seeing someone that lives close by. I would argue that, unless you are in a truly rural/remote area, it?s more about you than you not finding a good partner. Whatever ?it? is that is causing the problem will surface immediately upon uniting with this LDR partner.?
Now this is really interesting, because I think there are types of people especially prone to initiate LDR?s. That is, they intentionally start relationships that *have never been geographically proximal*.

?

Type #1 may be gays and lesbians. Acouple weeks ago, I was quoted on CultureMap (http://austin.culturemap.com/newsdetail/02-10-12-13-53-looking-for-love-in-all-the-wrong-places-meet-austins-top-datingrelationship-bloggers/) as saying that most people marry someone they were introduced to by friends or family. Well, that?s still true of straight folks: Although 23% of the straight relationships, total, begin online, those who marry still tend to have met using The Friends & Family Plan. But for the same-sex oriented, current stats put *61%* of all new relationships starting online (Research by Rosenfeld, 2010).

Not tough to see why that would be the case, given still-existent stigma, a smaller per-capita dating pool, and possible pressures to keep things on the down-low.?

Unfortunately, gay or straight, people who meet online tend to idealize one another and then become a bit disillusioned when meeting the actual person; they know more about one another than couples who met other ways, sometimes, but they also tend to like each other less after meeting than before (research by Norton and others, 2007). Again, these results speak to a pattern and there are many exceptions, my own marriage being a case in point. I met Vic online and I like him now more than then ;).

?

Type #2 of people who choose to launch a LDR without ever having been proximal might include people who *want to move* to a particular geographic area. This applies, for instance, to mail-order brides, a historical and still-existent phenomenon where women (and increasingly men) who want to relocate to another country or region will offer themselves as prospective spouses to those already living in the desired locale. They may feel that they aren?t a good fit with the politics, economics, and/or sociocultural rules of the place they?re actually from. (I?m guilty of this?I intentionally dated men in Austin, figuring I could love a man in Austin as well as a man from anywhere else, and then I would live in Austin. Bingo.)

?

And then there?s Type #3, the people who pursue LDR?s from the outset because *they do not wish to truly be intimate with anyone*. Actually, this type may launch a LDR at any point?beginning or middle or end?of a relationship. Feeling either ill at ease with intimacy, or valuing independence more than interdependence?either can be the motive. And I?m going to write much more on that topic for next week?s article.?

But for now, I?ll leave it at this: If you?re dating someone who is *not* pining when you?re apart, but who instead relishes the freedom and time away; if *you?re* the only one suffering during prolonged separations; then you?re probably with this style person.

I?ve encountered Type #3 a lot (or more accurately, the distressed partners of Type #3) in letters and amongst clients and students, and I think this type accounts for at least some of that curious phenomenon where people become likely to break apart after a successful LDR turns into something geographically proximal. Yes, data indicate that some of those break-ups are due to people idealizing one another and burying their Issues. But data *also* show that some of those folks resent having their freedom trampled once the distance is gone.

More on that?soon.

Thanks again for a great list, Corvid.

From Tom:? ?I?m A Type #4?

I guess I?m a type #4 then ;-) since I?m none of the others.

I met a person in a discussion group run by a major newspaper. We clicked mentally, then began a one-on-one correspondence. When she invited me to meet her in a vacation location, I was open, interested, and a little apprehensive. But meeting her ended all those concerns and we then were together via LDR for three straight years.

Why were we together? Because we were both looking for a real connection as opposed to the ones that had failed for us in our previous ?real lives.? She and I were both open to seeing where this would go, and it was never about avoiding true intimacy. Hey, everyone has his/her own tolerance for closeness, but we looked forward to more time together. We weren?t sighing in relief when we had to go back to our respective cities, 6 hours apart.

Why did we part, last year? Because we both realized that we needed to focus on the lives of our families and friends where we were. Neither of us was willing/able to move to be together *within any reasonable time frame (< 10 years, say)*. And the electronic communication also began to fail us.

But I have pictures that show how good we were together. I learned a lot about love and about my own issues in the past three years. And I think my next relationship is going to benefit.

Duana?s response:

Dear Tom,?
I?m sorry that relationship didn?t ultimately work out, but it certainly sounds worthwhile. Not everything worthwhile lasts a lifetime?but it?s valuable nevertheless.

And you?re right, there?s a Type #4 I missed: Those who met online and happened to fall in love.

It reminds me of a couple I know who met in a chat room in the mid-90?s. He was in CA, she was in NY, and they didn?t go online for the purpose of meeting someone?they went to discuss an interest and wound up falling in love. In their case, they arranged an in-person meeting, then arranged a wedding and a move (she moved to CA). They now have two kids and have been married for 14 years!

So there ya go: Type #4: Those who happened to meet online and fall in love.

Cheers,
Duana
