Open Senate seat presents GOP rare chance in Iowa

-- The announcement that veteran U.S. Sen. Tom Harkin would not run for re-election came as such a shock that neither his own party nor the Republicans had given any thought to who might succeed him.

Harkin and his Republican counterpart, Charles Grassley, have been an Iowa institution in the Senate since the 1980s, and Harkin's robust $2.7 million re-election fund suggested that no change was likely soon.

Now, his unexpected retirement has set the stage for a test of how the major political parties will respond to change not only here, but also nationwide, as demographic forces reshape the electorate.

With a real chance to win, Republicans will have an opportunity to show whether they can reach out to the growing Hispanic population in a closely contested Midwestern state - a major priority since the party lost the 2012 national race with white-only support. In Iowa, Hispanics have almost doubled over the past decade to more than 5 percent of the electorate, and have backed Democrats like Harkin and Barack Obama by a 70 percent margin.

The party will also show whether it can unify its restive factions, especially evangelical conservatives and the business-first establishment, which are sometimes pulling in different directions.

Meanwhile, Democrats will face the challenge of electing someone not named Harkin. The only other Iowa Democrat elected statewide in recent years, Gov. Chet Culver, was defeated soundly by Republican Terry Branstad in 2010.

"The bottom line is 72 hours ago this was a seat we weren't going to win," said Rob Jesmer, who was director of the National Republican Senatorial Committee last year. "And now it's a seat we have a really good shot at winning. "

National conservative and liberal interest groups are expected to invest more than $30 million in the race, far more than has ever been spent here for a nonpresidential campaign.

Iowa's status as a resolutely bipartisan state - split evenly between the parties in the Senate and Legislature - will make it a special target.

"All the ingredients are here for an extraordinarily expensive barnburner with record spending," said Patrick Dillon, former deputy White House political director under Obama.

The National Republican Senate Committee has appointed new Texas Sen. Ted Cruz to help identify potential candidates who could win a general election and weed out those who probably couldn't.

The Iowa race will be part of the battle for control of the Senate in 2014. Democrats have a 10-seat margin, but also the burden of defending more seats. Harkin's involves the most dramatic switch from a Democratic safe seat to one that's up for grabs.

In most states, a retirement announcement by a 73-year-old senator would seem less surprising. But Iowa has a tradition of constancy.

Harkin, elected to the Senate in 1984 after 10 years in the House, is Iowa's junior senator, outranked by Grassley, who was elected in 1980. The 2014 Senate election will be the first here without an incumbent since Richard Nixon was president.

Because of the surprise, the field of potential candidates may remain unclear for a while.

Among Democrats, four-term U.S. Rep. Bruce Braley quickly began calling donors and national party activists, and met Wednesday with Democratic lawmakers at the Capitol in Des Moines.

"What I'm focusing on is reaching out to people who can give me unbiased advice about why I should or shouldn't do this," Braley said in an Associated Press interview Wednesday.

Braley has built a reputation as a consumer advocate and has been a loyal House supporter of Obama's spending programs, in the mold of the liberal populist Harkin.

He said he planned to meet in Washington Thursday with Senate Democratic leadership at the invitation of Majority Leader Harry Reid and Sen. Michael Bennett, chairman of the Senate Democrats' campaign committee.

"Bruce has done a really good job making it seem like he would be an heir to Sen. Harkin," said former Iowa Democratic Party Chairman Scott Brennan.

Another possible Democratic candidate, Christie Vilsack, wife of former Iowa Gov. Tom Vilsack and the loser of a U.S. House race last year, is "leaving all options on the table," said Vilsack's congressional campaign manager Jessica Vanden Berg.

After last election's ugly losses by tea party-friendly candidates in Missouri and Indiana, some top Republicans are trying to avoid a candidate identified with the far right.

Some GOP leaders have already approached U.S. Rep. Steve King, an outspoken social conservative, to gently discourage him from running.

But there are signs King may be tempering his tone in consideration of a Senate bid. On Tuesday, he issued a statement supporting in principle a bipartisan Senate proposal on immigration reform, although he has been a fierce critic of illegal immigrants in the past.

Establishment Republicans are urging U.S. Rep. Tom Latham to run. The 10-term U.S. House member has fought off serious Democratic challenges in swing districts. He is less of a lightning rod than King, who memorably remarked in 2008 that a victory by Obama would have al Qaida "dancing in the streets in greater numbers than they did on Sept. 11."

"There will be enormous pressure for Latham to run," said Des Moines Republican fundraiser and activist Doug Gross, a former GOP nominee for governor.

The IEEE International Symposium on Technology and Society (ISTAS) is an annual international forum sponsored by the IEEE Society on the Social Implications of Technology (SSIT) to be held in Toronto, Canada, 27-29 June 2013. ?ISTAS13 is the annual symposium of the IEEE Society on the Social Implications of Technology (SSIT) which dates back to 1989.

ISTAS'13?presenters and panellists will address the implications of living in smartworlds - smart grids, smart infrastructure, smart homes, smart cars,?smart fridges?smart people.?ISTAS'13?will bring together participants sharing research, projects, and ideas about people living in smart environments. ?The environment around us is becoming "smarter". Soon there will be a camera in nearly every streetlight to do better occupancy sensing and ultimately a camera in every light fixture. Many appliances and everyday products such as automatic flush toilets, faucets, and sensor-operated showers are starting to use more sophisticated camera-based computer-vision technologies.

In a world of smart things like smart lights, smart toilets, smart grids, smart meters, smart roads, and the like, what happens when you have "smart people" (i.e. put sensors on people)??

What do we make of the growing numbers of businesses like department stores and restaurants that prohibit cameras, yet display QR codes that require cameras to read and understand?

This event will facilitate the Veillances to come together in acknowledging the wearer as a camera but also the supporting infrastructure that will enable intelligent 4G applications.

PFT: Rams will not hire Rob Ryan

Randy MossAP

We mentioned earlier today that 49ers wide receiver Randy Moss declared himself the best wideout in the history of the game.

You?ll likely see much more about him in the coming days, in many outlets, because he was so open and forthcoming and illuminating about many topics during his appearance at Media Day.

When Moss is on, he?s extremely interesting, he just chooses not to be on often.

But among the gems today was a candid admission that he didn?t particularly care for the way the 49ers used him this year.

In the past, it could have been a Keyshawn-level ?Just Give Me the Damn Ball? routine, but Moss said it so matter-of-factly it was easy to miss.

?I don?t like my role; I don?t,? he said. ?I like to be out there playing football. One thing that I?ve always had to really understand was being a decoy. It was put to me, Coach Dennis Green just said, ?Even though the football is not in your hand, you?re still out there dictating how the defense is playing the offense.? It took me awhile to really understand where he was coming from. Later on and now in my career, I understand that my presence out on the field, I don?t always have to touch the ball to be able to help the offense score touchdowns.

?Like I said, I don?t really like that, but it?s something that I?m used to. I have to grow to understand and grow to like it. I?ve always been a team player. I?ve never been about self. Anything that is going to push our team to victory and hopefully win a Super Bowl, I?m willing to do.?

No, that was Moss, who hasn?t always been accused to giving freely of himself for the greater good.

But 49ers offensive coordinator Greg Roman said Moss had been nothing but professional.

?He?s been great,? Roman said. ?I think he?s a great team player, and a mentor for all the guys, really.?

His love of competition has never been in doubt. Moss joked about past arguments, even fights, he?s had with coaches and players. But his role with the 49ers, as much as he might not like it, remains a valuable one, as Roman insisted Moss could still ?get behind a defense in a hurry.?

?When I hear people talk about how talented I am and how easy I make it look, I can honestly tell you people that it?s very hard work,? Moss said. ?I work out five times a week. I put the work in and for me to be able to go out there and have results it something I am proud of. It?s not always the individual results that I?m proud of. For me to be able to talk to a Michael Crabtree or talk to a Frank Gore or Percy Harvin and for them to go out there and have a good game that week, that?s something I can be proud of. That?s just me giving back to the NFL.

?I?ve always said, I don?t like what the NFL does for me because I?m very blessed. My family is blessed. I?ve always been the type of person to know what I can do to make the League better. At this point in my career, if I?m able to be vocal, to share a little knowledge and also to go out there and play, if that?s what it takes to win a championship, then I?m willing to do that. I?ve always been that way.?

Maybe so, but he hasn?t been quite the way he was Tuesday too often, or the perception of his career would likely be very different.

3 Tips To Drive Offline Traffic Online. | Search Engine Marketing ...

Help Me Help You.

I dealt with a client many moons ago who was in the real estate business. They were all about SEO, all about Internet Marketing, all about PPC (pay per click) which was music to my ears. But, (there is always a but?) they were not willing to do anything on their end to drive traffic to their web site offline.

After landing the client, I was driving downtown Orlando where I kept seeing their commercial real estate signs all over town, the signs had the basics, the phone number, the broker contact name, the company name, etc.. It was missing one key vital bit of information. The web site address. They had taken the time and money to create these brand new signs to match their brand new web site, but overlooked the web URL. Oooops.

In 2012, people visited 10.7 places before they made a purchase. Your marketing plan should be attentive to WHERE those 10.7 places are. It?s imperative, in today?s marketing climate to BE everywhere your consumers are. They ARE online, they are on LinkedIn, they are on Google using the search box, they are on their mobile cell phone or tablet, etc.. Here are three quick tips you should consider to drive offline traffic online.

1.) Signage.

As the above example shows, adding your URL / web site address to signage is mission critical. Folks may take a photo of your sign with their smart phone, or jot it down quickly to check out your offerings down the road.

2.) EMAIL Signature

This is a great place to add your URL / Facebook address / LinkedIn profile address, etc.

3.) Bills / Invoices / Letterhead.

Your web site can be a great customer service portal, be certain to give your clients a place where they can get issues resolved, etc., listing your URL / web site address on your bills, checks, letterhead, etc., can cut down on inbound phone calls, etc..

To learn more about target marketing your customers online, give one of my SEO / Internet marketing experts a call today. In Orlando: 407-830-4550, Nationwide: 866-998-6886.

Getting Into Home Business Network Marketing

Posted by James K. Watts on Jan 24, 2013 in Internet Marketing |

There?s two sides to the network marketing coin (and I assure you it is nothing like Harvey Dent?s coin): one is for the IBOs who are enjoying positive results within their MLM business efforts and the other is for those looking into home business network marketing industry as a means of acquiring a second income source. Either way, each side are quite promising and you are thinking about entering into a world of business that is much more interesting and fascinating than considering exactly the same office day in and day out. It?s quite possible that you?ve developed worn out of the malaise surrounding your cubicle and it?s time you had been confronted with some new faces and merchandise by way of a new endeavor in a home-based business according to multi-level marketing.

If you are an IBO, you?re on the side that?s distributing a very popular network marketing product. By your success, you represent whether your franchise is the kind of company into which new prospects would like to try investing their time and expense. You may have a downline, small or big, also it attracts income opportunity seekers who wants to transition from doing work for another person to working for themselves.

Whenever they get to know you through your downline, you?d like them to find out that you?re a reliable business and you and your group are adhering to the highest standards of business integrity and customer satisfaction.

The other side of the coin is where you find yourself if you are searching for a network marketing business opportunity. On this side you?re responsible for making the correct decision by what kind of MLM business you wish to join. You have to be thinking about the product you need to distribute as if you don?t want it, why would anybody else? You also want to make an informed choice. Therefore, the different options are a bit of time looking up the company online and discovering whether or not it?s a high network marketing business or maybe it?s a lesser-known effort. The more popular it is, the greater your chances are to acquire prospects faster than if no one includes a clue what your merchandise is.

What side with the coin are you betting on? Either way, there doesn?t appear to be a losing chance at all.

On 3rd try, Turkish court convicts alleged bomber

ANKARA, Turkey (AP) ? After acquitting her twice before, a Turkish court has convicted a woman of involvement in a deadly 1998 bombing and sentenced her to life in prison.

Pinar Selek, a Turkish sociologist now living in France, was accused of aiding and abetting Kurdish rebels and planting a bomb in Istanbul's 17th-century spice market that killed seven people and wounded more than 120.

Selek's previous acquittals were overturned by a higher appeals court. Her lawyer, Yasemin Oz, says the sociologist will appeal Thursday's guilty verdict.

Oz says the court, meanwhile, confirmed the previous acquittal of a man being tried alongside Selek.

Human rights groups say the long-running case against Selek has exposed flaws in Turkey's legal system.

Socially isolated rats are more vulnerable to addiction, report researchers

Jan. 23, 2013 ? Rats that are socially isolated during a critical period of adolescence are more vulnerable to addiction to amphetamine and alcohol, found researchers at The University of Texas at Austin. Amphetamine addiction is also harder to extinguish in the socially isolated rats.

These effects, which are described this week in the journal Neuron, persist even after the rats are reintroduced into the community of other rats.

"Basically the animals become more manipulatable," said Hitoshi Morikawa, associate professor of neurobiology in the College of Natural Sciences. "They're more sensitive to reward, and once conditioned the conditioning takes longer to extinguish. We've been able to observe this at both the behavioral and neuronal level."

Morikawa said the negative effects of social isolation during adolescence have been well documented when it comes to traits such as anxiety, aggression, cognitive rigidity and spatial learning. What wasn't clear until now is how social isolation affects the specific kind of behavior and brain activity that has to do with addiction.

"Isolated animals have a more aggressive profile," said Leslie Whitaker, a former doctoral student in Morikawa's lab and now a researcher at the National Institute on Drug Abuse. "They are more anxious. Put them in an open field and they freeze more. We also know that those areas of the brain that are more involved in conscious memory are impaired. But the kind of memory involved in addiction isn't conscious memory. It's an unconscious preference for the place in which you got the reward. You keep coming back to it without even knowing why. That kind of memory is enhanced by the isolation."

The rats in the study were isolated from their peers for about a month from 21 days of age. That period is comparable with early-to-middle adolescence in humans. They were then tested to see how they responded to different levels of exposure to amphetamine and alcohol.

The results were striking, said Micka?l Degoulet, a postdoctoral researcher in Morikawa's lab. The isolated rats were much quicker to form a preference for the small, distinctive box in which they received amphetamine or alcohol than were the never-isolated control group. Nearly all the isolated rats showed a preference after just one exposure to either drug. The control rats only became conditioned after repeated exposures.

Morikawa said that this kind of preference for the environmental context in which the reward was received provides researchers with a more useful way of understanding addiction than seeing it as a desire for more of the addictive substance.

"When you drink or take addictive drugs, that triggers the release of dopamine," he said. "People commonly think of dopamine as a happy transmitter or a pleasure transmitter, which may or may not be true, but it is becoming increasingly clear that it is also a learning transmitter. It strengthens those synapses that are active when dopamine is released. It tells our brain that what we're doing at that moment is rewarding and thus worth repeating."

In an important sense, says Morikawa, you don't become addicted to the experience of pleasure or relief but to the constellation of environmental, behavioral and physiological cues that are reinforced when the substance triggers the release of dopamine in the brain.

Morikawa and Whitaker have also been able to document these changes at the neuronal level. Social isolation primes dopamine neurons in the rats' brain to quickly learn to generate spikes in response to inputs from other brain areas. So dopamine neurons will learn to respond to the context more quickly.

If the control, group-housed rats are given enough repeated exposure to amphetamine, they eventually achieve the same degree of addiction as the socially isolated rats. Even from this point of comparable addiction, however, there are differences. It takes longer for the socially isolated rats to kick the addiction to amphetamine when they're exposed to the same extinction protocols. (They spend time in the same environments, but amphetamine is no longer available.)

"So the social isolation leads to addiction more quickly, and it's harder to extinguish," said Whitaker.

Whitaker said that the implications of these findings for addiction in humans are obvious. There is a rich literature that documents the negative effects of social isolation in humans, as well as a great deal of evidence that addiction in rats and humans is functionally similar at the neurological level.

"It's not a one-to-one correlation, but there are socially impoverished human environments," she said. "There are children who are neglected, who have less social input. It's reasonable to make guesses about what the impact of that is going to be."

Morikawa points out that their findings may also have implications for how social isolation during adolescence affects conditionability when it comes to other kinds of rewards.

"We think that maybe what's happening is that the brain reacts to the impoverished environment, to a lack of opportunities to be reinforced by rewarding stimuli, by increasing its sensitivity to reward-based conditioning," said Morikawa. "The deprived brain may be overinterpreting any reward it encounters. And if that's the case, it's likely that you are more conditionable not only to drugs but to any sort of reward, including food reward. One interesting possibility is that it might also make adolescents more prone to food 'addiction,' and then to obesity."

Gross Remedies for Health Issues | Women's Health News Blog ...

Talk about stomach-turning: Last week, a study from the New England Journal of Medicine found that transplanting excrement from a healthy person into the gut of someone with an intestinal infection cured the infection more successfully than antibiotics did. As disgusting as a fecal transplant sounds, it?s not the only appalling medical remedy some experts currently recommend to cure certain ailments. Check out these six below?you won?t believe the seemingly effective things some docs suggest you put inside your body.

Yogurt to cure a yeast infection
Yogurt contains Lactobacillus acidophilus, a type of bacteria naturally found in healthy vaginas. Snagging yogurt?s body benefit, however, isn?t as simple as snacking on a cup of the fruity stuff. To ease and even cure the killer itching and burning, Mary Jane Minkin, M.D., clinical professor of Ob-Gyn at Yale University School of Medicine, suggests inserting a dab or two of plain, unsweetened yogurt containing live cultures inside the vagina just as you would insert drugstore-bought anti-yeast cream. This introduces the healthy bacteria on site where it can kill yeast more effectively.

Hemorrhoid cream for reducing under-eye circles
Hemorrhoid creams soothe and shrink delicate rectal tissues by constricting blood vessels. Put a little under your eyes, and some dermatologists say it?ll work the same way, de-puffing eye bags and getting rid of dark circles around the thin skin of your under-eye area. That said, this is a home remedy that hinges on whether you can handle the smell, as hemorrhoid cream doesn?t exactly have the most fragrant odor.

Maggots to heal a wound
This ancient remedy has experienced a resurgence in modern hospitals in the past decade, according to an article in the March 2009 issue of the Journal of Diabetes Science and Technology. That?s thanks in part to the rise of antibiotic-resistant bacteria finding their way into bed sores, post-surgical wounds, and foot ulcers commonly found in diabetics. How it works: Doctors place creepy, crawly fly larvae onto a patient?s wound. Immediately the squirmy maggots start feeding on bacteria-laden tissue, clearing it out and allowing healthy tissue to grow in.

Leeches for dissolving blood clots
It?s another old-school cure that modern docs are bringing back, CBS News reported last year. Leeches are slimy, eel-like critters usually found in lakes, where they attach themselves to a host and feed by leeching blood through your skin. To treat a blood clot or boost blood circulation in an injured body part, MDs might put one of these blood suckers on the skin for 15 or so minutes, where they bust clots and reestablish optimum blood flow. The FDA approved the sale of leeches for medicinal purposes in 2004, so at least docs don?t have to wade through ponds to find them.

Horse urine for hot flashes
Short-term hormone-replacement therapy has helped many women deal with the discomfort of menopausal symptoms such as hot flashes. But the hormones in one type of HRT, known by the brand name Premarin, come from a pretty icky source: horse urine, specifically that of a pregnant mare, who produces excess estrogen in her urine.

Chia seeds to score nutrients
These are the gritty, unappetizing little seeds that when mixed with water and slathered on a terra cotta figure sprout into a green ?fro of hair. Now they?re a trendy superfood, with nutritionists touting their high levels of antioxidants, omega-3 fatty acids, and fiber, according to an article in The New York Times. Native to Central and South America, the seeds are finding their way into stir-frys, cereal, juices, even cookies.

Odd biochemistry yields lethal bacterial protein

Jan. 22, 2013 ? While working out the structure of a cell-killing protein produced by some strains of the bacterium Enterococcus faecalis, researchers stumbled on a bit of unusual biochemistry. They found that a single enzyme helps form distinctly different, three-dimensional ring structures in the protein, one of which had never been observed before.

The new findings, reported in Nature Chemical Biology, should help scientists find new ways to target the enterococcal cytolysin protein, a "virulence factor that is associated with acute infection in humans," said University of Illinois chemistry and Institute for Genomic Biology professor Wilfred van der Donk, who conducted the study with graduate student Weixin Tang.

Enterococcus faecalis (EN-ter-oh-cock-us faye-KAY-liss) is a normal microbial inhabitant of the gastrointestinal tracts of humans and other mammals and generally does not harm its host. Some virulent strains, however, produce cytolysin (sigh-toe-LIE-sin), a protein that, once assembled, attacks other microbes and kills mammalian cells.

"The cytolysin protein made by Enterococcus faecalis consists of two compounds that have no activity by themselves but when combined kill human cells," van der Donk said. "We know from epidemiological studies that if you are infected with a strain of E. faecalis that has the genes to make cytolysin, you have a significantly higher chance of dying from your infection." E. faecalis contributes to root canal infections, urinary tract infections, endocarditis, meningitis, bacteremia and other infections.

Enterococcal cytolysin belongs to a class of antibiotic proteins, called lantibiotics, which have two or more sulfur-containing ring structures. Scientists had been unable to determine the three-dimensional structure of this cytolysin because the bacterium produces it at very low concentrations. Another problem that has stymied researchers is that the two protein components of cytolysin tend to clump together when put in a lab dish.

Van der Donk and Tang got around these problems by producing the two cytolysin components separately in another bacterium, Escherichia coli (esh-uh-REE-kee-uh KOH-lie), and analyzing them separately.

"The two components are both cyclic peptides, one with three rings and the other with two rings," van der Donk said. "Curiously, a single enzyme makes both compounds."

In a series of experiments, the researchers found that one ring on each of the proteins adopted a (D-L) stereochemistry that is common in lantibiotics (see image, above). But the other rings all had an unusual (L-L) configuration, something van der Donk had never seen before.

Scientists had assumed that the enzyme that shaped enterococcal cytolysin, a lantibiotic synthetase, acted like a three-dimensional mold that gave the ring structures of cytolysin the exact same stereochemistry, van der Donk said.

"But we found that the enzyme, enterococcal cytolysin synthetase, makes the rings with different stereochemistry," he said. "I don't know of any other examples where one enzyme can make very similar products but with different stereochemistries."

The researchers don't know how the enzyme accomplishes this feat, but found a clue in the sequence of amino acids that make up the protein rings. The chemical characteristics of the three amino acids in the middle of the ring structure and their proximity to another amino acid, a cysteine, determined whether the rings took on a D-L or L-L stereochemistry.

The researchers tested the idea that the amino acid sequence of the cytolysin protein was guiding the stereochemistry by looking at other lantibiotic proteins with similar sequences. So far, every protein they've tested that has the same sequence characteristics conforms to the pattern they discovered, van der Donk said.

Further tests showed that the cytolysin produced in E. coli had the same anti-microbial and cell-killing potency as the E. faecalis variety.

"Knowing the structure of enterococcal cytolysin and having a method to produce it in relatively large quantities will allow scientists to find out how it kills human cells and, in turn, how we might fight against it," van der Donk said.

The National Institutes of Health supported this research. Van der Donk also is a Howard Hughes Medical Institute investigator.

Logitech gambled big on video conferencing, lost

Logitech's PR machine is on the loose this morning, trying to dampen expectations before the company announces its quarterly financial results later in the day. The key message is that we shouldn't expect any great shakes from the video conferencing side of the business. In fact, there'll be a $211 million charge against earnings, which is big enough to wipe out the previous quarter's income four times over, and which stems entirely from this source of pain:

"The enterprise video conferencing industry has experienced a slowdown in recent quarters and consequently, through this period, the video conferencing unit has not sustained the growth Logitech originally anticipated."

That's a blanket statement, describing a whole section of the industry and not just pinning the blame on LifeSize, the video conferencing company that Logitech picked up in 2009 for $405 million. It so happens that Polycom and Cisco have also reported ongoing slides in video conferencing sales, so Logitech's explanation is entirely justified -- not that it makes the LifeSize acquisition look any smarter.

Stopping smoking reduces risk of bacterial pneumonia in people with HIV

Jan. 22, 2013 ? Bacterial pneumonia is one of the commonest and most serious infections occurring in people infected with HIV.? A metanalysis of cohort and case control studies published in BioMed Central?s open access journal BMC Medicine finds that current smokers with HIV were at double the risk of bacterial pneumonia than non-smoking counterparts, but that when people stopped smoking their risk was reduced.

The metanalysis reanalysed the data of several thousand participants with HIV, from 14 studies based in USA, Europe and South Africa. Overall it appeared that current smoking was associated with a 70-100% increase in risk of bacterial pneumonia, compared to non-smokers, but that stopping smoking decreased this by about a third. This was independent of CD4 count or antiretroviral therapy.

Prof Paul Aveyard, from University of Oxford who led the study explained that, ?Antiretroviral treatment means that people with HIV can have a normal life expectancy. However they still have substantially increased health risks compared to the general population, including risk of pneumonia. Our results show that smokers with HIV have twice the risk of bacterial pneumonia, but that stopping smoking can reduce this risk. In order to prevent this potentially life threatening lung disease we believe that smoking cessation programs should be? promoted as part of HIV treatment.?

How Does the World of Fashion Influence The World of Interiors?

Fashion + Decor pic 1 How Does the World of Fashion Influence The World of Interiors?

How does the world of Fashion influence the world of Interiors?

According to Gretchen Aubuchon, Editor in Chief of Fashion + Decor, who recently spoke with industry leaders in both the fashion and the home design fields about this very topic, feels that ?the worlds of fashion and decor are colliding.? ?She explains where there was once a 5 to 6 year lag from the runway to furniture showrooms, ?then a couple of years ago we were seeing just a 2 year or 2 season lag, and now both worlds are engaging as the creative minds are joining together with the social media forces.?

It seems, according to many, that almost as soon as a collection hits the runway, reporters, photographers and bloggers are sharing these events with their readers and viewers. Through these images that are posted on blogs, websites and across our television screens to the consumer. So, where fashion was once a true driver of the world of interiors, the two are now working together.

ikat How Does the World of Fashion Influence The World of Interiors?

Could social media be the real influencer here?

Aubuchon believes that ?designers are now looking to the same blogs and websites to see what their customers see, what trends seem to be taking off and have holding power.? She continues to tell me that ?The brands in fashion and home decor are now hearing the same things, at the same time and therefore not really influencing eachother.

I do think that fashion will always influence home decor a little bit? However, she adds ?I also see decor now stepping in to influence fashion a little bit.? She explains this by using the Icat prints as an example. They were all the rage in the furniture showrooms last year and now they are starting to hit the runways.

tartan How Does the World of Fashion Influence The World of Interiors?

The worlds of fashion and decor are colliding.

Another example of this fashion and decor collision Aubuchon continues, ?Lonny Magazine?s December issue came out the same week as the Chanel 2013 Pre-Fall collection. Both collections featured tartan and Scottish influences. I believe that we are seeing the merging of these two worlds.? Again she believes that much of this ?colliding of two worlds? has much to do with social media. ?Never before,? she adds, ?have these worlds been more in tune with each other than they are now.?

The drivers behind the top brands are seeing and hearing the same things as the consumer is, at the same time. Street Style is another important and powerful influence in the worlds of fashion and design.

personal style How Does the World of Fashion Influence The World of Interiors?

?Our lives are not beige, why should our homes be all beige?

?In the past,? Aubuchon continues, ?we were letting the catalogue companies, such as Pottery Barn, direct our style. We would never do that with our clothes, so why would we do that in our homes?? She adds, ?Our lives are not beige and why would we dress in bright colors and come home to nothing but beige?? Now, she believes, that customers are starting to dress their homes with the same personality they dress themselves. ?Your home is a reflection of yourself.?

Interior designers have always believed in decorating your home to suit your way of living, tastes and lifestyles, but this was not always happening. ?If you love bright color, and if you love fun prints, you shouldn?t be just wearing them,? says Aubuchon. ?They should be in your home as well.? You should be living with them.

floral interiors How Does the World of Fashion Influence The World of Interiors?

Florals, a sign of the times?

Some of the big trends in both fashion and home decor that Aubuchon is noticing are the same in both the world of interiors as well as the world of fashion. ?I attended Fashion Week as well as High Point and we are seeing the very same trends. The number one trend across the board is floral.? She also notes that ?Vogue had a huge floral spread devoted to such and Vogue is saying that Floral is ?it? this spring.

Even the pre-fall collections are featuring florals everywhere, and this is so different from what normally happens.??People are done with their bland beige. ?I think this is why people went to color-blocking a year ago and now we?re moving into florals. ?People want to be happy,? says Aubuchon. It?s a sign of the times. The economy is getting better and people?s moods are lifting.

denim interiors How Does the World of Fashion Influence The World of Interiors?

Forever in blue jeans

Denim is making a huge comeback. According to Aubuchon ?We are also seeing a lot of denim. Denim is all over the runway and also in the home ? in all shades and all styles. I?m going against the grain here,? she adds, ?but orange is still big for spring 13.? Stripes and checkers are also coming back. Marc Jacobs has stripes featured all over his line, but he has checkers all over the Louis Vuitton line. (Jacobs is also creative director for Louis Vuitton.) Aubuchon predicts a resurgence of both stripes and checkers, both in the home and on the runway.

emerald interiors How Does the World of Fashion Influence The World of Interiors?

Emerald green is the Color of the Year

?I love that Pantone has a color of the year,? says Aubuchon. ?I love emerald green. However, I don?t think that everyone should be going out to buy emerald green couches. I think we should look at it as though it is a baseline color for things moving into 2013 but we shouldn?t let a color dictate our styles.? Aubuchon is noticing that in fashion as well as in the home people are focusing less on trends and more on buying things that align with their own personal style.

While I love these color trends, I don?t think that we should look at them so seriously that we change our wardrobes or change the way we decorate.? Instead, if we embrace the color, we should look at somehow pulling it into our own wardrobes, Aubuchon suggests ? perhaps a scarf, perhaps a pillow, instead of refurnishing, or repainting. Interestingly enough, this color has been popular before Pantone declared it as such. We?ve been seeing emerald for a while now in our interiors as well as in the showrooms.

leopard print How Does the World of Fashion Influence The World of Interiors?

Animal instincts

A perfect example of whether a print is in style is how it is being used and picked up. Aubuchon thought that the leopard print was a trend, yet she attended High Point only to see it all over the place from furniture to pillows to rugs. Clearly this is not a pattern that is going anywhere soon. And in New York City, leopard print is being worn by practically everyone you see ? whether it is a shoe, bag or scarf. ?I think that leopard print will become like the navy and white stripe,? Aubuchon predicts. ?It will be a staple and it is clearly here to stay. It is no longer a trend. It has transitioned well. It?s a classic now.? The cowhide rug, however, she believes has been played too much and is on its way out.

framed scarf How Does the World of Fashion Influence The World of Interiors?

Advice to those just starting their own nests.

Starting a new home can be a large, expensive and daunting undertaking. Aubuchon advises on where to start small and what to build upon. There are certain areas where we do not need to spend a lot of money, and there are areas where money should be spent. Our tastes are all different, as are our lifestyles, so what might be right for one person might not be right for another.

?I believe that curtains and fabric are so important. No one should be buying their window treatments at Target or any place like that. If you don?t have the funds to go to a high end fabric source, there are so many discounters that sell really great fabric brands at really great costs. Go there and get deals and have drapes made,? she says. When it comes to furniture, she believes that you buy the best that you can afford. If you can?t afford some of the more expensive chairs, go to an estate sale or antique store and spend a little bit of money, have them painted and re-covered and they will turn out to look like something that is sold for much more at an upscale furniture store.

There are great pieces out there to be found. With couches, go to Ikea and get some custom made curtains or a custom made slipcover. For those just getting started who do not have a budget for art, find personal items around the house, post cards and frame them. Frame your grandmother?s Hermes scarf. Load up the walls with stuff that?s you. If you can?t afford wall paper, paint your walls or do some stenciling. She also believes that when starting out buy staple pieces of furniture that suit your personality and lifestyle, perhaps a dining room table with some cool vintage chairs, or a nice couch to accent your living space.

black interiors w bright How Does the World of Fashion Influence The World of Interiors?

What?s in style this ?fall?

I asked Aubuchon what she predicted to be in style this fall, both on the runways and in our homes and without hesitation she replied ?Color and florals. The fall shows are usually filled with beige, black, grey and in 2013 we?re going to see the addition of color. ?While ?black, beige and grey are here to stay, we will be seeing fewer monochromatic color schemes, especially in our homes? She added that just as a camel trench is a classic, ?an all grey room or all black room has the same staying power.

She also believes that we will see fewer discussions around trends and more around what people like, and making sure that they are attaining that style in fashion and in the home and at a quality level. ?People will be aligning themselves with brands that represent their personal style instead of simply following the trends.? Aubuchon adds that ?Street Style has had a little bit of an impact of what we are seeing in fashion. I think it?s driven what we?ve seen with J. Crew with the layers and patterns, tons of accessories. Street Style is now being brought into brands.? Street Style is the art of capturing fashionistas all over the world through the mediums of magazines and blogs.

Aubuchon believes that ?We need to stop looking at the worlds of fashion and decor as two separate worlds. If you feel strongly about the world of fashion, it should be reflected in your home as well.?

Gretchen Aubuchon is Editor in Chief of Fashion+ Decor. ?Style your home?Style yourself. Fashion + Decor takes fashions from the latest runways and pairs them with a match in home decor.?Fashion + Decor?is the?largest?and the?only?online tool that inspires readers to bring their personal style out of the closet and into every single room of the home.?

Field Excursions: Exploring the wilds of Prentice Cooper State ...

Rock climbing is one of many outdoor diversions at Prentice Cooper State Forest. (Photo: Tennessee Department of Agriculture, Forestry Division)

On a map, Prentice Cooper State Forest is a green island to Chattanooga?s west, blanketing the banks of the Tennessee River and the bluffs of Walden?s Ridge. The forest protects nearly 26,000 acres and highlights the spectacular Tennessee River Gorge, offering a range of recreational opportunities for those who enjoy exploring Chattanooga?s natural landscape.

?Prentice Cooper?s trails are located along the Tennessee River Gorge, which is what makes this forest unique,? Jim Lane,?Prentice Cooper State Forest supervisor, said. ?Most of our trails follow the bluff lines and offer spectacular views.?

The property for Prentice Cooper was purchased from various owners between 1938 and 1944 and was proclaimed a state forest in 1945. The area was named for William Prentice Cooper Jr., who served as governor of Tennessee from 1939 to 1945.

The North Suck Creek Bridge. (Photo: Tennessee Department of Agriculture, Forestry Division)

Today, activities within Prentice Cooper State Forest include timber management, wildlife conservation, forest research and all forms of recreation: hiking, rock climbing, camping, horseback riding, mountain biking, ATV and dirt bike trails, and hunting. The forest has five full-time staff members, which operate out of the fire tower on Suck Creek Mountain in Marion County, Tenn. Two TWRA staff members are also dedicated to the forest.

Prentice Cooper State Forest offers 35 miles of hiking on three main trails: the 12-mile Pot Point Loop Trail, the 10-mile Mullen?s Cove Loop Trail and a 14-mile section of the Cumberland Trail.

Prentice Cooper makes up the southernmost section of the Cumberland Trail, a 190-mile trail system that traverses the Cumberland Plateau from Cumberland Gap National Historic Park in Kentucky to its southern terminus on Walden?s Ridge. Parking at the trailhead can be found at Signal Point on Signal Mountain. Overnight parking is not allowed at this parking lot.

Both loop trails?Pot Point Loop Trail and Mullen?s Cove Loop Trail?intersect with the Cumberland Trail. Trailheads and parking for the loop trails begin at the Cumberland Trail parking lot located within Prentice Cooper State Forest on Suck Creek Mountain. Another parking area is available about three miles past the Cumberland Trail parking lot within the forest. Overnight parking is allowed in both areas.

Some sightseeing highlights within the forest include an overlook at Snooper?s Rock along the Mullen?s Cove Loop Trail; Indian Rock House, one of many archeologically significant rock outcroppings found within the forest, located at the junction of Mullen?s Cove Loop Trail and the Cumberland Trail; a natural bridge along the Pot Point Loop Trail; and a 225-foot swinging bridge along the Cumberland Trail, which passes over North Suck Creek to US-27.

In 2008, 457 acres within the forest were added to the National Historic Register: the ruins of the Shake Rag community, a former mining town established in the 1880s at the base of Hicks Mountain by McNabb Mines. Permanently abandoned in 1905, the site is considered one of the most intact historic archaeological sites relating to 19th-century mining in the state. Some of Shake Rag?s ruins are visible from Mullen?s Cove Road.

In 1989, a 350-acre area within the forest, the Hicks Gap Natural Area, was designated a state natural area in order to protect the large-flowered skullcap (Scutellaria montana). The area?s dry and open conditions provide optimum habitat for the federally threatened species. Hicks Gap is located off Mullen?s Cove Road on the side of Hicks Mountain.

Prentice Cooper is also home to a premier rock climbing area in the Southeast: the Tennessee Wall. Located off the Pot Point Loop Trail, the Tennessee Wall?also known as T-Wall?is a stretch of sandstone cliffs on Walden?s Ridge that reach about 100 feet in height. It can be accessed from a trail off Mullen?s Cove Road.

Camping is permitted on a first-come-first-served basis at two designated primitive campsites within the forest: Hunter's Check Station and Davis Pond. Both campsites can be accessed by roads within Prentice Cooper State Forest on Suck Creek Mountain. Additionally, five backpacking campsites are available along the hiking trails within the forest.

With more than 70 miles of dirt and gravel roads, Prentice Cooper is a playground for mountain biking, horseback riding, dirt biking and ATVs. However, unauthorized off-road travel is strictly prohibited, and roads are closed to motorized vehicles during the winter (Dec. 20 to March 15) in order to minimize impact during the wet season.

Prentice Cooper?s expanse of land supports a wide range of wildlife. According to Lane, even the occasional black bear passes through.

?Sometimes, we spot a bear coming through the forest from other sections of the state, but there are no resident bears that we know of,? he said.

The section of Prentice Cooper east of Highway 27 is a designated wildlife management area, managed in cooperation with the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency for deer, turkey, raccoon, squirrel and several nongame species. Managed turkey and deer hunts are held each spring and fall, and only licensed hunters are allowed in these areas of the forest during hunts. Hunting is permitted according to statewide regulations in areas outside of the wildlife management area, which is primarily in the Signal Mountain section and east of Suck Creek Road.

Lane advises the public to call the Prentice Cooper offices or check the website for hunting closure dates before making plans to visit.

Timber within the forest is also managed on small plots averaging 20 acres at a time, Lane said, with a maximum of 140 acres a year cut within the forest as a whole. Cut areas are re-established through natural regeneration and the planting of native trees.

?Our goal is to provide a sustainable forest that will provide wood products from the forest forever, while also enhancing wildlife habitat, recreation, research and education,? he said.

Prentice Cooper State Forest does not have a visitors center; however, their offices are located off Suck Creek Drive on Suck Creek Mountain. Trail maps can be found online at www.cumberlandtrail.org, and printed versions are available at the office by calling 423-658-5551.
