Girls basketball: Breast Cancer Challenge at Fair Lawn | Varsity ...

January is a big month for invitational tournaments, many geared toward a specific charity. One of the best will be Saturday at Fair Lawn with the annual Breast Cancer Basketball Challenge.
This, if you recall, is the tournament started a few years ago by Mike Weaver at Park Ridge, and it seems to get better every year. Beyond the competition on the court, the event raises money for an important cause, and most importantly, educates young women on breast cancer.
The highlight of the day is the talk that Indian Hills coach Kim Tanis gives to the families after every game. Tanis is a breast cancer survivor, and she holds nothing back telling a story that touches everyone who hears it.
Weaver and everyone involved does an incredible job putting this together, and it?s a great community-building experience. Here?s a schedule of the games:
Park Ridge vs. Indian Hills, 11:30 a.m.
Cliffside Park vs. River Dell, 1 p.m.
Mahwah vs. Ridgefield Park, 2:30 p.m.
Glen Rock vs. Paramus, 4 p.m.
Lyndhurst vs. Fair Lawn, 5:30 p.m.
The premier matchup of the day should be Mahwah-Ridgefield Park. The Lady Scarlets, led by junior Katherine Haines, are ranked No. 7 in The Record preseason Top 25, and the Thunderbirds have been impressive enough to warrant a long look when the new Top 25 comes out on Tuesday.
