Digital Retail Price Index ? Centre for Economics and Business ...

?

A comparator of online and in-store retail price inflation

Introduction

The Centre for Economics and Business Research (Cebr) was commissioned by TalkTalk to undertake a study quantifying the levels of price inflation observed in both online and in-store retail channels. The study adopts a top-down approach, using macroeconomic retail trade data from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) , overseas trade data from HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) and inflation data from the UK?s main import markets.

?

Our Findings

?

  • The Digital Retail Price Index (DRPI) shows online prices growing by around 2.2% between Q1 2007 and Q1 2012, averaging an annual rate of 0.4%.

?

  • In contrast the In-store Price Comparator Index shows in-store prices rising by around 6.4% over the same period, averaging 1.2% annually.

?

  • Based on this evidence, this suggests that a consumer faces a rate of inflation that is three times higher if they replicated their online spending habits in-store.

?

  • UK-based internet retailers are the main drivers of lower DRPI inflation in the last two years. This is in contrast with Internationally-based internet retailers and in-store retailers who have both seen retail prices rise faster. For the former, this is in part due to a weaker Sterling. For the latter, increased inflationary pressures on fixed overheads may have contributed to faster retail price growth in-store.

?

  • The latest data shows annual DRPI inflation at 0.3% in Q1 2012, whilst the In-store Price Comparator Index registered annual inflation of 2.5%.

?

  • We expect the DRPI to be lower than the In-store Price Comparator Index over the next twelve months as energy prices still remain elevated ? disproportionately affecting high-street businesses with relatively higher overhead costs. Furthermore, Internationally-based internet retailers are expected to benefit from lower air freight costs whilst consumer goods prices in global markets are expected to remain broadly stable.

Amid scrutiny, Facebook reportedly talking to NYSE

After the Nasdaq botched Facebook's debut, is the company considering listing on the NYSE?

By Roland Jones

Facebook is facing more controversy Thursday, including reports the company is evaluating the possibility of switching its stock listing from the Nasdaq stock market to the New York Stock Exchange.

The report follows news Wednesday that Facebook, its founder Mark Zuckerberg and the banks running its initial public offering have been sued by disgruntled shareholders, who argue that the social network?s revised growth figures were disclosed to a select group of clients, rather than broadly with all investors, ahead of its offering.

U.S. regulators have already said they are investigating how the IPO was handled. Morgan Stanley, the lead underwriter on the deal, says it has fully complied with the rules for IPOs.

The New York Stock Exchange is seeking to capitalize on Nasdaq?s role in Facebook?s botched IPO, according to The Wall Street Journal, and has sounded out the social network about a listing switch, exchanging ?several emails? with the company, raising the possibility of moving to the Big Board, the Journal said.

However, the NYSE has denied there were any discussions with Facebook, the newspaper noted.

A separate Bloomberg News report Thursday says Morgan Stanley?s Chief Executive Officer James Gorman was present on a conference call between investment bankers and Facebook executives to arrange the terms of the social-networking company?s IPO.

They faced a trade-off, Bloomberg said: ?Set the IPO price low and give up enough money to let investors profit from a day-one pop -- or push the price high to help the company reap as much as possible from the sale.?

Facebook Chief Financial Officer David Ebersman?s aim ?was to maximize the company?s IPO proceeds and to cap the first-day increase at 10 percent,? according to the report.

Facebook reportedly set aside some 25 percent of its shares for regular retail investors -- or about 105.3 million of the 421.2 million shares the company said in a regulatory filing that it expected to sell in its public offering.

If that group of retail investors had bought their stock at the IPO price of $38, by Wednesday?s close the value of their collective investment would have declined by $631.8 million, or 16 percent, based on the closing price of $32 and assuming those investors have not sold the stock.

While major investment houses and hedge funds were allocated stock in Facebook before it went public, individual investors had to wait until after the IPO to buy shares in Facebook.

Critics say the underwriting banks set the price of the Facebook offering too high and sold too many shares to the public, and the IPO debacle is raising broader questions from regulators about the fairness IPO process.

Shares of Facebook edged higher Thursday. The social network?s stock closed Wednesday at $32, down 16 percent from its $38 IPO price.

After the close of stock market trade on Wednesday, electronic trader Knight Capital Group said it suffered a pre-tax loss of $30 million to $35 million on the botched Nasdaq trading debut of social media giant Facebook and is demanding the exchange compensate that amount.

The loss, which Knight said will be recorded in its second-quarter results, was due to numerous problems related to the Facebook initial public offering.

Reuters contributed to this report.

Aggressive Chicago prosecutor Fitzgerald to quit

CHICAGO (Reuters) - Patrick Fitzgerald, the aggressive U.S. attorney in Chicago whose investigations ranged from al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden to CIA leaks and two consecutive Illinois governors, said on Wednesday he would step down effective June 30.

Fitzgerald, 51, who was appointed to the post just days before the September 11, 2001, attacks, is the longest-serving U.S. attorney in Chicago history.

He is known for taking a hard line on political corruption, and has overseen thousands of criminal cases, including those of organized crime bosses, former Chicago officials who rigged city hiring, and supporters of terrorism.

Fitzgerald was also lead counsel in the 2007 trial of I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby, the chief of staff and national security adviser to Vice President Dick Cheney, which resulted in Libby's conviction on charges of perjury and obstruction of justice.

Under Fitzgerald, the U.S. Attorney's Office also convicted media baron Conrad Black.

Fitzgerald, who is married with two young children, has no future employment plans and will take time off this summer before considering career options, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office statement.

"He will be a tough act to follow - that's the understatement of the day," said Andy Shaw, president and CEO of the Better Government Association, a Chicago-based political watchdog group. "He brought a level of commitment and passion and skill to that job that elevated it to a new level."

Shaw said Fitzgerald was "in a class of his own" because he had no political agenda, which was illustrated by his office's successful prosecution of an Illinois Republican governor, George Ryan, and then a Democratic governor, Rod Blagojevich.

While Shaw said Fitzgerald did not wipe out political corruption in Illinois, he reduced it. "People think longer and harder about misbehaving in part because of the force of his office," said Shaw.

After Blagojevich was charged with trying to sell the U.S. Senate seat President Barack Obama held before he won the 2008 presidential election, Fitzgerald said authorities had halted a potential crime spree that would have made Illinois legend Abraham Lincoln "roll over in his grave."

Fitzgerald could make even the top levels of Washington power quake when he acted. Karl Rove, former President George W. Bush's most powerful White House aide, was investigated by Fitzgerald in the illegal leak of a CIA agent's name to a journalist.

Rove said in his book "Courage and Consequence," that when he learned in a letter from Fitzgerald in 2006 that he would not be prosecuted for his role in the scandal, he wept.

'PROSECUTOR'S PROSECUTOR'

In a statement, U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder called Fitzgerald "a prosecutor's prosecutor" who served the American people "with the utmost integrity and a steadfast commitment to the cause of justice."

His arrival in Illinois rocked Chicago's political world because the city had been used to U.S. attorneys who were part of the local political and legal class.

The mild-mannered son of Irish immigrants, Fitzgerald is a native of Brooklyn, New York, who worked college summers as a janitor. Fitzgerald graduated from Amherst College with a bachelor's degree in economics and mathematics in 1982, and from Harvard Law School in 1985.

Before coming to Chicago, Fitzgerald worked with the U.S. Attorney's Office in Manhattan, where he participated in prosecutions involving the August 1998 bombings of the U.S. embassies in Kenya and Tanzania, and the 1993 bombing of the World Trade Center.

Fitzgerald was nominated to the Chicago federal prosecutor post by Republican U.S. Senator Peter Fitzgerald (no relation), who ignored pressure to appoint a local lawyer.

In 2007, Patrick Fitzgerald was named The National Law Journal's "lawyer of the year." Two years earlier, before his marriage, Fitzgerald was named to a People magazine list of the sexiest men alive."

Shaw said he hoped senior Illinois U.S. Senator Richard Durbin made a nationwide search for the prosecutor's replacement.

Matt Orwig, the former U.S. attorney of the Eastern District of Texas, who is now a partner at Jones Day in Dallas, said he talked with Fitzgerald once about whether he was interested in going into private practice.

"He was very focused on his job and could not be distracted by any offer," said Orwig. "He said when he left he would leave first and then decide what he wanted to do."

"Pat is someone who listens to his inner voice and he just thought it was time," Orwig said of Fitzgerald's decision.
