Wild boar attacks and injures 4 people in Berlin

(AP) ? Berlin authorities say they shot and killed a 120 kilogram (265-pound) wild boar after it attacked and injured four people including a police officer in a residential neighborhood.

Police said Tuesday the boar bit a 74-year-old man on the back and leg, and knocked a 74-year-old woman to the ground and injured her hip on Monday afternoon in the Charlottenburg area of the capital. It also bit a 24-year-old woman before she climbed aboard a parked car to safety. All three were treated in a hospital.

Police say when a police officer arrived, the boar attacked him and cut his leg before he pulled his gun and killed the animal with "multiple shots."

Wild boars are relatively common in green Berlin, though rarely cause problems beyond digging up gardens.

Every single junk food meal damages your arteries, new study reveals

ScienceDaily (Oct. 30, 2012) ? A single junk food meal -- composed mainly of saturated fat -- is detrimental to the health of the arteries, while no damage occurs after consuming a Mediterranean meal rich in good fats such as mono-and polyunsaturated fatty acids, according to researchers at the University of Montreal-affiliated ?PIC Center of the Montreal Heart Institute. The Mediterranean meal may even have a positive effect on the arteries.

The findings are being presented at the Canadian Cardiovascular Congress, which runs in Toronto until Wednesday, by the head of the study, Dr. Anil Nigam, Director of Research at the Cardiovascular Prevention and Rehabilitation Centre (?PIC) and associate professor at the university's Faculty of Medicine.

Bad fat vs. good fat

Dr. Nigam undertook the study to compare the effects of junk food and typical Mediterranean meal on the vascular endothelium: the inner lining of the blood vessels. By measuring endothelial function, it is possible to determine how easily the arteries will dilate after a temporary, five-minute occlusion, following the consumption of the two types of meals. This is a very interesting analysis for researchers to perform as endothelial function is closely linked to the long-term risk of developing coronary artery disease.

The study also revealed that participants with higher blood triglyceride levels seemed to benefit more from the healthy meals. Their arteries responded better to the Mediterranean meal compared to people with low triglyceride levels. "We believe that a Mediterranean-type diet may be particularly beneficial for individuals with high triglyceride levels, such as patients with metabolic syndrome, precisely because it could help keep arteries healthy," Dr. Nigam said.

Mediterranean meal vs. junk food meal

The results were established in 28 non-smoking men, who ate the Mediterranean-type meal first and then the junk food-type meal one week later. Before beginning, the men underwent an ultrasound of the antecubital artery at the elbow crease after fasting for 12-hours to assess their baseline endothelial function. The researchers then tested the effects of each meal. The first was composed of salmon, almonds, and vegetables cooked in olive oil, of which 51% of total calories came from fat (mostly monounsaturated fatty acids and polyunsaturated fats.) The second meal consisted of a sandwich made of a sausage, an egg, and a slice of cheese, and three hash browns, for a total of 58% of total calories from fat: extremely rich in saturated fatty acids and containing no omega-3s. At two hours and four hours after each meal, participants underwent further ultrasounds to assess how the food had impacted their endothelial function.

Dr. Nigam and his team found that after eating the junk food meal, the arteries of the study participants dilated 24% less than they did when in the fasting state. In contrast, the arteries were found to dilate normally and maintain good blood flow after the Mediterranean-type meal.

"These results will positively alter how we eat on a daily basis. Poor endothelial function is one of the most significant precursors of atherosclerosis. It is now something to think about at every meal," Dr. Nigam said.

The Rush, Especially Among Moms, to Judge ... - Families in the Loop

~By Wendy Widom, Families in the Loop

Claire was my daughter?s first nanny. She came highly recommended by the most trusted lactation consultant in town, who had connected Claire with another family five years earlier. Chatting with the mom when checking Claire?s references, I learned how wonderful she had been with preemie twins, caring for them from the moment they came home from the hospital. I thought I had hit the nanny jackpot.

A month later, I walked into the living room to find my three-month-old daughter lying precariously on a pillow on the floor, awake. Claire was lying next to her on the floor, fast asleep.

Claire?s swift departure kicked off the first of our many frustrating nanny searches. One interview in particular with a woman named Karen sticks out in my mind even now, half a decade later. During the interview, Karen mentioned that she had been a nanny in Manhattan. ?Where in Manhattan?? I asked eagerly, happy to have past geography in common. ?By a park,? she replied uncomfortably. When I asked her which park, she said, ?Name a couple and I?ll tell you which one it was.?

When I ushered her out of our home a few minutes later, she said, ?When you call my references, don?t ask about Karen. They know me as Nadine.?

Our experiences once hiring a nanny often proved just as frustrating. One young woman showed up smelly and drunk, another woman lied about watching MTV all morning with our kid, one lady told me my kid didn?t like her because I was too overprotective, and then there was the gal who emailed me an hour beforehand to say she wouldn?t be coming in ? ever.

Each failed attempt to find the right caregiver compounded my guilt and sense that I was failing my daughter. Why wasn?t I content to be alone with her all day? Why did I still yearn for parts of my life not directly connected to motherhood? Why wasn?t I a good enough mother to do it all on my own?

Those questions and more came rushing back this week after hearing about the Krims, the New York family who suffered the unimaginable when their nanny of two years presumably murdered two of their three young children. Almost immediately, women took to the mommy sites, denouncing Marina Krim for hiring a nanny in the first place. On platforms like The New York Times, both men and women let loose, saying things like, ?Mothers who choose to work are just asking for trouble,? and asking, ?Why does a stay-at-home mom even need a nanny??

Here?s my well-thought-out response to these comments: Shut up. For one second, let?s forget about the fact that Marina Krim doesn?t work. Let?s even try to ignore the fact that she is clearly a loving and devoted mom. What really makes me sick to my stomach is how quick we are to castigate women who need assistance with caring for our kids.

I?ve experienced this mom bashing way too frequently. In one telling instance, it happened when hubby and I were out to dinner with a couple in their 70s. Out of nowhere, I found myself fending off a fusillade of questions that seemed more like accusations. ?Why aren?t you having more kids? Why are you working? What do you mean you find it hard?? My responses were the same I always give: I don?t feel like I can handle any more kids and I can?t imagine not working in some capacity. As his wife looked on, the man told me?condescendingly, ?She did it. She was alone with two boys. She didn?t have family around. She did it all on her own.?

Well good for her, I said in response. She?s obviously a better mother than I am.

Though my reply put an end to the barrage of unpleasant inquiries that evening, it didn?t put an end to the judgment that moms, and not dads, face every day. Sadly, we seem to have forgotten that it does indeed take a village to raise a child. Yet for too many of us, there is no village. There isn?t even a hut. No grandparents, parents, aunts and uncles, cousins, best buds, and mothers? helpers around on a consistent basis. We?re often lonely and isolated. We often have partners who are gone for long stretches of time, in my case overnight at the hospital for more than 60 nights in three months. We often yearn for adult interactions that don?t involve baby.

And contrary to what movies like? The Nanny Diaries depict, most of us don?t spend our time getting our nails done when the nanny is around, though I happen to think that you should be able to do whatever the heck you want when you finally have a few moments to yourself. We go to work, and when we get that paycheck, we give most of it to our family?s caregiver. Years ago my mom, then a minimum-wage earning sales associate, said she stayed home with us because childcare would have eaten up her whole paycheck. I chuckled at the time, knowing that with a college education it would be different for me. But it?s not.?Most of the moms I know pay their nannies a huge chunk of their take home earnings, and then those nannies in turn are barely able to pay their bills. And the vicious cycle continues.

I can?t say who?s to blame for all of this. Is it a government that doesn?t even give its own employees paid maternity leave? Is it the businesses reluctant to hire women of childbearing age or rehire them once the kids are off to kindergarten? Is it women who criticize rather than support their fellow moms? Or are we all to blame for creating a culture that tells women we?re bad mothers if we can?t do it all on our own, need or want to work, or can?t conform to an outdated definition of motherhood? Perhaps it?s all of these reasons and some I?m only beginning to understand.

Regardless of the answers, my heart goes out to the Krims. I can?t imagine the depth of their pain right now. Losing a child is staggeringly horrendous. For it to happen at the hands of someone they trusted to care for their children is probably more excruciatingly painful than anyone can possibly imagine. We make decisions for our children each and every day. We hope that those decisions will keep them healthy, happy, and safe. And at rare times like this, when a woman apparently crumbles under the weight of her own demons, we realize how powerless we may be to protect them.

Australia's new home sales fall 3.7 pct in Sept. - Business News - Sina

New home sales in Australia fell for the third consecutive month in September due to the loss of consumer confidence in housing sector, a new report released on Tuesday by the Housing Industry Association (HIA) showed.

The HIA mew home sales report showed a decline of 3.7 percent in September, following a fall of 5.3 percent in August.

The report said sales in the detached housing segment recorded a fall of 3.5 percent in the month while multi-unit sales dropped 4.2 percent.

HIA Chief Economist Harley Dale said the persistent weakness in new home sales in 2012 reflected a dire lack of consumer confidence in the housing sector.

"Interest rates have come down since November 2011 and there is a recognition that the home-buying environment has improved in 2012. However, households remain reticent to actually make a decision to buy," he said.

"This situation is especially evident in the new home building sector where excessive taxation instills a bias against new housing relative to existing property."

However, Dale said interest rate cuts should help foster a recovery in new home sales in the December quarter, along with new home incentives for first time buyers in three states and a promising recovery gathering legs in Western Australia.

Innovation Requires An Autocracy - Business Insider

YouTube/TedX

Panera CEO Ron Shaich says that when it comes to "betting and executing," democracy has to end.

These days, anyone can get a radical idea off the ground. Technology and social networks have made the world more democratic. ?

The same thing is happening in companies; there's a more decentralized way of innovating. This unstructured approach?has worked well in the digital space and for small companies like data startup SumAll, where salaries are transparent and the entire company helps make decisions.

Because of these successes,?people argue that leadership from the top-down is a dying strategy, because it stifles the flow of ideas. ?

But?Panera Co-CEO Ron Shaich,?in a post on LinkedIn,?argues that that isn't the case.?He points out that companies like Google crowdsource and use a grassroots approach during "Phase 1," but when it comes to?"betting and executing" on something, democracy has to end.

While Google engineers spend 20 percent of their time on innovative projects, and the company has small, self-managing teams, Shaich says that its cofounders Larry Page and Sergey Brin devote "100?percent of their time?or close to it?to focusing on innovations that dramatically advance the company?s performance."

Shaich writes:

"...in the all-important second phase, where a promising idea evolves into a game-changing strategy, innovation works best when democracy yields to autocracy. Einstein once said, ?If at first, the idea is not absurd, then there is no hope for it.? Who but the CEO has the influence?and, yes, the power?to marshal the company?s resources behind an ?absurd? idea and drive it through the organization?"

raging universe: The Fertility of Failure

raging universe: The Fertility of Failure

The Fertility of Failure

Saturn and Achievement

You probably know about Saturn ... restrictions, frustrations, self consciousness and criticism, inner recognition of talent, and the relentless failures that create obstacles to achievement in that sector of life. One hurdle begets another. But for Saturn, failure is a treasure chest that holds the key to solid and enduring success, after trial, error, correction, and perfection.

Saturn delivers rewards only after sustained effort. We're taught that failure is an embarrassment, an invalidation of self, and a blight on one's character, none of which is necessarily true. Not succeeding at a desired goal can merely be a step to higher achievement as a result of working more and improving skills, and waiting until technique is honed to its best productive level.

Frequently failure leads to studying what's wrong, and sometimes this educational nugget is sewn into the fabric of a venture from the start to make sure it doesn't work out. It's only meant to be a step in the direction toward satisfactory achievement, especially if one aims high. The obstacles provide information, direction, and insurance for the future. In that case, failure comes as a relief so one can move on.

I think one secret of a good life is seeing the value in these blocks as an individual progresses, learning not to perceive them as personal flaws, but another day in mastering the tied shoe lace. I'm sure you remember trying over and over to accomplish a feat, even getting to the point of despairing and giving up, but then the magic moment comes and it all clicks into place bringing pride and jubilation.

Saturn can't function without setbacks and disappointment. Much of what is finally produced by the entity rests on the full acceptance of this state of affairs, wherein ideas are formulated and edited and practice is performed until evidence of expertise is tangible. Within failure lies solid confidence, when you realize how good you've become regardless of others' opinions. The aim is to find self validation and then you're ready for presentation in the world with accompanying success. Saturn provides a framework of support while you work on inner development until ready to emerge. Then the restricting barrier comes down.

And so it is for the United States and her Pluto return in Saturn ruled Capricorn. Failure is becoming a familiar phenomenon in American politics as a frustrating paralysis has gripped the governmental processes. After the previous administration hopes were extremely high that the nation's troubles were over when the term ended and the new exciting person took charge. Of course people hoped for quick redemption and better times, but considering the cumulative number of flaws in the system, an acceptance of the country's mistakes will probably be required with no magic bailouts, no shortcuts through enchanted woods, and no magic saviors, even with Neptune in Pisces.

The moist enchanted woods are actually a good symbol for the rich aromatic fertile soil that gives birth to growth with Saturn, especially with Pluto's love of useful decay. And in decay is where our system is. It's no wonder that the chaotic patchwork efforts to piece it together are failing noticeably. So noticeable, in fact, that even the medicated and/or distracted masses are perceiving the absence of success. A very good sign. If the failure is so potent as to penetrate the thick cloud around the American people's cognition, then who knows what could happen? In time. It seems like the fall has been stepped up lately and I think that's also a good sign. With a Saturn return just completed, we're opening a new phase in our destined acquisition of justice and equality through many more challenging encounters. One must always remember, that with Saturn, these prizes must be earned. It's impossible to determine when intellectual ideals match group evolution. The ideals always have to be a step ahead, don't they? So acceptance of the failure to reach them could turn attention to the progress already made and what needs to be done to get to the next level. With Saturn returning to natal Saturn in Libra the phenomenally uncivilized discourse dominating the public arena was impossible to miss. Shocking comments often crossing the border into obscenity have become accepted routine and the infantile name-calling from everywhere keeps sending us further into the dark ages of verbal sharing. If you read speeches from history you can see the decline and it's possible that the descent into barbaric communication has a purpose. Education is also in decline and other factors are combining to bring collective attention to the improvement necessary in order to fulfill the Libran destiny. Libra is one on one and I've always had a theory that the two party system the country favors is the path to learning how to carry on high minded debate and eventual cooperation. Sometimes the opposite is one step to the goal. Language changes as history progresses but the urge to come to productive agreement remains. We really do want to work it out, don't we? We do really like one another, do we not?

Interestingly, the presidential debates this year had a curious combination of civilized exchange and boorish childish outbursts. Bodies were twitching, but a few ideas did actually penetrate the barrier separating the eager listener/students and the frightened ego driven maniacal performers. Truth was evasive inasmuch as?it ever honestly wants to be revealed. Glimmers will suffice.

Dreams of an economic promised land for all citizens has diminished markedly and the widening gap between the haves and have-nots seems destined to continue until resolution looms into view. Perhaps the lowered standard of living is exactly what's indicated for numerous reasons, one being the preservation of what we've got left on a finite earth. The psychological health of a population content with what it has instead of grasping and growing every millisecond of the day could be a major payoff after the contraction and failure of Saturn is complete. Of course you know that will take plenty of time in Saturn's slow and steady way.

The failures in the Middle East seem poised to continue and even escalate and these too could be instructive in terms of rerouting the country from her military expansion. Internal conflict with its high level of violence and bursting prison system at home has been neglected in favor of murder elsewhere. I "fail" to see how we can continue on this path and expect a healthy society. But for now, the realities are coming into focus with potential deterioration before repair.

?The grand experiment in creative democracy that started in 1776 has not met its mark quite yet, and a good look at why might help, in case any are still looking for an ideal. With Pluto returning in Capricorn it could seem at first that the failure is profound, and with that understanding some degree of hopelessness can be expected on and off. Exposing the depth of it is probably preferable to covering it up and that takes practice. People who point it out might be shunned since ideas about fixing the systemic failure haven't been fully formulated yet. But listening carefully, as painful as it might be, hopefully will be the choice. Increased governmental control is not the answer given its current state, nor is absence of government considering the helplessness of the body politic. Smaller government, bigger government, it makes no difference when the entity is faulty. Working with the discomfort of Saturn is a virtual guarantee that intelligent use of the time will eventually reap productive results from failure's fertile ground. Theoretically speaking.

IS launches new ADSL option | IT-Online

Internet Solutions today launched uncapped@work, an uncapped ADSL solution designed for end users who require optimised connectivity at work and uncapped, unshaped connectivity at night for more bandwidth-intensive activities.

For this stage of the product release, the product will be made available to the IS wholesale channel.

?The DSL market has matured significantly,? says Brett Steingo, innovation and technology manager at IS. ?Experienced broadband users are particularly sensitive to product performance and the nature of restrictions placed upon them by shaping and policy enforcement. During work hours, Internet access needs to be optimised for mission-critical services such as e-mail, collaboration, communication tools and access to hosted applications. At night, usage patterns change as end users consume bandwidth-intensive video or music content, engage over social media, perform backups, replicate data or update software.?

Steingo explains that while gamers, power-users, micro and SoHo business users are all constantly scouting the range of consumer and SME solutions to meet their particular requirements, they are often faced with the choice of inadequate performance or excessive costs.

?We have therefore created a service that combines the best of both worlds, as the uncapped@work solution meets the increasing demand for access to business-class services by day, and the ability to continue work or engage in more consumer-focused Internet usage by night.?

The uncapped@work solution achieves this by optimising transactional traffic over bandwidth heavy applications like torrents during peak hours and offering unrestricted usage between midnight and 6:00am. By allocating a dynamic IP address, end users are given the freedom to make use of their own router or modem. Two concurrent connections are also allowed on this service at any time. The service excludes Telkom ADSL line support and rental, and IS fair use policies apply.

?With the launch of IS uncapped@work we are now able to offer end users a business-class service at a highly competitive price,? Steingo says. ?This will enable end users to experience high-quality broadband connectivity without many of the usual limitations.?

OCD and Homeschooling | Psych Central

OCD and HomeschoolingAfter reading many of John Holt?s books in college and subsequently working with him in Boston, I became committed to the homeschooling movement. This was in the mid-?70s, way before homeschooling became an acceptable alternative to traditional schooling.

When my three children were young, we homeschooled off and on throughout the elementary school years. My son Dan, in particular, loved the freedom of being able to explore his interests as he pleased. He continued homeschooling throughout high school, and received his diploma from a nontraditional school that works with homeschoolers. Always bright and self-motivated, he was truly born to homeschool. He has since graduated college.

His diagnosis of obsessive-compulsive disorder didn?t come until after he graduated high school, and while he had known something was wrong for ?a while,? his father and I didn?t have a clue. So the decision to homeschool, on our part, had nothing to do with the fact that Dan has OCD. From Dan?s point of view, it was how he learned best. He did give high school a try for a few months in ninth grade, but decided to leave so he could ?continue his education.? Whether his OCD played a part in that decision or not, I don?t really know. But I do know that Dan genuinely loves learning, and he and homeschooling were a great fit.

Over the years, I?ve noticed, mostly from talking with people and reading blogs, that a considerable number of children with OCD are homeschooling. This is a totally unscientific observation; I don?t have any statistics. But I do have a question: Why? No doubt everyone has their own reasons, but some possible explanations might include:

  • OCD often is associated with above-average intelligence, as well as creativity, and these two attributes do not always mesh well with traditional schooling.
  • The school is unable or unwilling to meet the child?s special needs (even though they are legally bound to do so).
  • The child refuses to attend school. This might be directly related to the OCD (for example, he or she may believe the school is contaminated), or indirectly related (the child is being bullied because of his or her odd behaviors).
  • The child is willing to attend school but parents feel it is advantageous (in reference to OCD) to keep the child home.
  • The parents or child believe homeschooling is the best way for this particular child to learn (independent of any issues with OCD).

I believe in homeschooling. While I know it?s not for everyone, it can be a rewarding experience for parents and children who undertake it for the right reasons.

But if your child has left school or has never attended solely because he or she has obsessive-compulsive disorder, it may be a good idea to reevaluate the situation. It?s true that school might be a fervent breeding ground for OCD triggers, but is avoiding it the right thing to do?

To complicate matters more, for those also dealing with social anxiety and perfectionism, school can be torturous. I know it?s easy to say ?avoidance is never the answer,? but when you have a child who is terrified of going to school, what do you do? Sometimes, could it be that avoiding certain situations is the right thing to do?

As with everything related to OCD, there are no easy answers. Parents, therapists, teachers, and students all need to become as educated as possible about the disorder. If it?s decided the child will attend school, the appropriate support network should be put in place. Of course, a support system is also necessary if the child is homeschooling.

Either way, the child must receive proper treatment. Exposure Response Prevention (ERP) Therapy, the frontline treatment for OCD, is actually based on facing one?s fears, and is therefore the opposite of avoidance. So the actual location of the battleground (school or home) isn?t so important. What matters is that the war against OCD is faced head-on.

Janet Singer?s son Dan suffered from OCD so severe that he could not even eat. After navigating through a disorienting maze of treatments and programs, Dan made a triumphant recovery. Janet has become an advocate for OCD awareness and wants everyone to know that OCD, no matter how severe, is treatable. There is so much hope for those with this disorder.

Janet has been published on various mental health sites, and also has her own blog (www.ocdtalk.wordpress.com) where she shares Dan?s story and talks about anything related to OCD. She is married with three children and lives in southwest Florida.

Daily Kos: Dear Mrs. Romney, SHUT THE HELL UP

First of all, for some reference, let's have a linky to the stinking pile of crap that you unloaded on Good Housekeeping. As a former local new reporter who suffered through an interview with Bill Frist in his dumbass American flag tie, let me tell you, you should RIGHT NOW thank the journalism gods that I didn't do this interview because I'm so fed up with lying pols, I would have ripped into you like Hurricane Sandy, but that's for another day.

Let's talk about THIS comment:

I've been a First Lady of the State. I have seen what happens to people's lives if they don't get a proper education. And we know the answers to that. The charter schools have provided the answers. The teachers' unions are preventing those things from happening, from bringing real change to our educational system. We need to throw out the system.
Where to begin, where to begin...I'll start with the first line

As a First Lady of the State, please tell me how that had to do with actually setting foot in a classroom? Have you taught a non-nanny-cared-for kid how to read? Have you taught an ELL kid how to structure a sentence in English? How many kids have you tutored to take the ACT? Then SHUT THE HELL UP.

Too academic? Well, how many kids have you had walk in with bleeding wrists from a cutting episode or with a black eye from a punch by Daddy? Have you had any interaction with a kid arrested for murder? Or who spends her weekends going to see her daddy in prison (that was a kindergartner in my experience, fyi.). Have you dealt with a kid who wears hand-me-down-cleats to school because he had no other shoes? No? Then SHUT THE HELL UP.

Have you had to teach to at least five different tests in 15 years? (we love us some tests in Tennessee, despite the popular assumption...that said tests SUCKED was irrelevant). Have you had to work with kids in situations where you literally do not have enough textbooks so you hope someone is absent? Have you spent a DIME of your own money on pencils, paper, snacks, folders, classroom library books or ANYTHING that enhances a classroom? No? Then SHUT THE HELL UP.

I get that you like charter schools--since they line the pockets of your social circle, you should-- but please, PLEASE show me the charter school that is going to educate the special needs kids that our public school serve daily. Or the immigrant kids who are here, legally or illegally, to make their lives better. Which one is going to do that? Have you spent even a ten-minute block of time with a kid who is 16 but is functioning on a 4th grade level? Have you changed the diaper of a 12-year-old? No? Then SHUT THE HELL UP.

Yes, there are problems with some unions. Frankly, here in Tennessee we can't even begin to relate with the expenses that are associated with some of the infamous "Yankee teacher unions" as one person actually called them to my face, and some teachers here and there; however, how DARE you suggest that the entire system should be scrapped because of this strawman union boogeyman you and your ilk have conjured up in your demented, overly-indulged brains. I bet you 10,000 bucks your kids and your daughters-in-law did not attend public schools, so please...please SHUT THE HELL UP.

Sincerely,
An English and theatre teacher who is fed up with your bullshit.

PS: Aw, Ann, thank you for bumping me to REC list...I would make a first time comment, but you'd be really offended.

PPS: That Yankee comment was very tongue-in-cheek. There is still a huge distrust of people "up North" because of some whackadoo percieved liberal agenda, even among my union-working blue-collar friends. They just do not get the irony at all. I certainly am not anti-union, nor do I take the benefits that they have provided for granted. I belong to a local association and we have fought for radical stuff like a fair evaluation system, retiree benefits, fair pay, more rigorous standards, etc.

PPS: Hey, Ann, apparently other folks don't like it when you essentially suggest that we'uneducated and incompetent since we went through that awful public school system. I'm at 333 recs, which is probably close to the number of pairs of shoes you own.

Ultimate Antivirus And Firewall - What Is The Most Beneficial ...

Personal computer Viruses are the Definition of difficulty

Around the globe, computers as well as other devices that are connected for the web are at risk of becoming infected by a laptop virus. But what is a personal computer virus, anyways? Like with humans, a virus can make your computer system ?sick?, and may be spread from personal computer to laptop or computer. A computer system virus is described as a system that infiltrates your computer?s defenses, disrupting regular computer system functions, and can even delete programs, files, and can even wipe your hard drive clean. Some viruses basically make items frustrating, and are intended as pranks. Others, although, have an even more destructive objective, and may make points extremely challenging, and may even wind up costing you dollars for repairs.

Several Kinds of Viruses

At present, there are many several kinds of viruses. The majority of them infect your laptop through attachments in emails, or by clicking on popup advertisements, or perhaps merely visiting a site. Some viruses are dangerous, and others malicious, but not a true threat, as stated previously. Occasionally, all that takes place is that you get spyware dumped in for your system. Each and every week, a new, stronger virus is getting produced, generating antivirus firms remain on their toes. But what are the distinct varieties of viruses available?

Trojan Viruses ? This type of virus is likely the sort which is most generally encountered. They lie in wait on websites, popup advertisements, and emails, and don?t make themselves out to become threats. Some get caught right away by antivirus software program, and are readily taken care of. Others, though, can be a bit sneakier. Trojans is often disguised to look like a legitimate file. But the second you open that file, you have infected your laptop or computer. Some Trojans are destructive, and other individuals dump spyware in to your technique.

Worm Viruses ? A worm may be an exceptionally serious risk to your laptop, and other individuals. Worms are defined as a sub-class of viruses, and can spread with out any interaction from users. Whenever a worm infects your system, it utilizes file and knowledge transfers to carry itself in to your system. E mail may be the preferred selection of travel, but definitely, you?re able to choose them up just about anywhere, at any time, and they don?t generally make themselves known to your antivirus. Probably the most hazardous portion about a worm is the fact that it may make replications of itself, and if it is in your email, it is going to infect each single individual you will have listed as e-mail contacts. They?re destructive, and may wipe out hard drives.

Blended Threats ? These are in all probability essentially the most sophisticated form of a virus attack. Blended threats mix some of the worst attributes of malware, viruses, worms, and Trojans in to a single, but extremely critical threat. They aren?t encountered particularly generally, but once they are, watch out. They use vulnerabilities inside your method to infiltrate, infect, and spread. They may be also capable of spreading to other computers, like a worm does. But they do not attack just one particular aspect of your computer system. In reality, they are capable of launching various attacks to .exe files, HTML files, and so on all at the same time.

Laptop or computer Virus Removal and Future Protection

Now, this will need to be obvious to most. The right method to get rid of viruses and shield your computer is by investing in antivirus software. Positive, you are able to download some antivirus programs at no cost, but they don?t deliver the total protection program like the applications you purchase. Depending on what you do even though online will figure out what sort of antivirus plan you require. If you happen to just play games, and surf the internet for leisure, then you do not require something overly fancy. But in case you run your business online, like internet designing as well as other such occupations, then you could prefer to spend a little added and get the more advanced applications. Naturally, these are just opinions and suggestions. Within the finish, it is private preference on what you get.

Close race makes up for waning zeal in expat vote

BERLIN (Reuters) - With the presidential election too close to call, hundreds of thousands of Americans living in Europe have been posting their absentee ballots with a sense that they could truly make a difference on November 6.

From Berlin to Paris and London to Madrid, they have closely tracked the battle between Democrat President Barack Obama and Republican challenger Mitt Romney, though the emotional temperature is several degrees lower than four years ago, when most expats rallied behind Obama after two terms of George W. Bush, whom many thought had tarnished the U.S. image abroad.

Both the Republicans and Democrats have courted the expat vote since 1988, when absentee ballots reversed the outcome of a Senate race in Florida, allowing Republican Connie Mack to pip Democrat Buddy MacKay, who had led when polling stations closed.

Absentee ballots also made the difference in another Senate race in 2008. Democrat Al Franken came from 215 votes behind to win with the help of absentee votes.

The tightness of the presidential race, with a Reuters/Ipsos tracking poll showing a dead heat [ID:nL1E8LO7LJ], has made the expat vote arguably more important than ever. Both Republicans Abroad and Democrats Abroad organizations have gone all out to get Americans registered and voting in their home states.

"Americans in Germany are really excited about this year's election but nervous too," said Nancy Green, an opera singer who chairs the Democrats Abroad in Berlin. A New York state voter, she helped hundreds get registered in their states this year.

"Everyone knows it's going to be really, really close," she added. "People abroad realize our votes really count. We've done everything we can to find Americans and help them register."

U.S. citizens wanting to vote have to be registered in advance in a state, each with different rules and deadlines. Even though there is no data available about the distribution of the expat vote, it could have an impact in key swing states such as Ohio, Florida and Virginia.

MOST EXPATS FOR OBAMA?

"There's a high interest among expats in Germany, but I sense those on the Democrat side aren't as fervent today as they were in 2008," said Thomas Leiser of Texas, chairman of German's Republicans Abroad and a businessman in Frankfurt. "There's intense disappointment in President Obama's leadership."

The estimated 250,000 Americans in Germany - the fourth largest U.S. expatriate community in the world - traditionally leant toward Republican candidates, partly due to a large cohort of generally more conservative soldiers stationed there, and the coordinated efforts of the military to get absentee ballots to the 50,000 troops.

But that shifted in recent elections as disenchantment with Bush in Germany and across Europe grew - though political scientist James Walston of the American University in Rome believes expats in the military will still mostly vote Romney.

"The majority of soldiers will tend to be Republican voters because of the demographics," Walston said. "They tend to come from the Southern and Central states where the Republicans win."

But civilian expats appear to have been more influenced by the overwhelmingly pro-Obama stance of their European hosts. Many Americans in Europe, for instance, are baffled that Republicans oppose national health care, which most Europeans take for granted.

An opinion poll by the Emnid polling institute found 87 percent of German nationals would vote for Obama and only 5 percent for Romney if they had the chance to cast ballots. Those numbers are similar to polls of Germans taken four years ago.

In France, a CSA poll found 67 percent would prefer Obama versus 5 percent for Romney. In 2008 the same poll found 83 percent for Obama and 10 percent for Republican John McCain.

"Based on what I'm hearing, I'd say most expats are going to vote for Obama, probably about 90 percent," said Alan Benson, a leader of American Voices Abroad, which helps people register.

But Benson, a 53-year-old teacher who has lived in Germany for 47 years, said the enthusiasm for Obama was gone. "People were over-excited by Obama and got disappointed. Some people voted once in a lifetime in 2008. We met people who crawled out from under their rocks for that. But they're not coming back."

WHERE'S THE PASSION?

In Britain, where about 400,000 Americans live, several of them admitted the mood was subdued this time and they were less passionate about Obama. Most seem disillusioned as the promise of hope and change was dashed by partisan politics and Congressional obstacles.

"This election is different," said Kendred Dove, 25, a marketing executive whose vote will count in Arizona. "In 2008 there had been a real turn against Republicans after Bush. Obama symbolized a bright new future and had the celebrity factor. Neither candidate has the celebrity factor anymore."

American expats interviewed at random in Berlin, Paris, Madrid and Brussels said they were leaning towards Obama, but with less enthusiasm than in 2008.

But a vote's a vote, however zealous the voter.

"People may not be as passionate as in the last election, when we were voting for the first black American president and the end of the Bush years, but we are just as determined," said Brian Lee Ford, a psychotherapist in Madrid. "With Bush, it was embarrassing that we couldn't justify our foreign policy."

In France, where about 100,000 Americans live permanently, a short walk through a 17th century cobblestone courtyard in Paris leads you to the "Obama Meetup", where several dozen Democrats have assembled in a room decorated with a life-size cut-out of the president, blue Obama T-shirts and a few U.S. flags.

"France has one of the highest (U.S. expat) voter registration rates in the world. Congratulations everybody!" announced Eileen Bastianelli, who heads social media for Democrats Abroad.

Tom McGrath, 53, a banker at the helm of Republicans Abroad, said Americans were suffering in a deep recession and Obama would be held accountable.

"French people that I know can't really imagine Obama losing," he said. "They don't see Romney as a serious contender. They just cannot imagine Americans would throw out Obama. What they miss is that Americans haven't experienced the type of economic situation that we've been through since the 1930s."
