Romney intensifies fight for social conservatives (AP)

DENVER ? Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney shifted his focus from the economy to abortion, religious freedom and gay marriage in recent days, part of an intensified effort to win over social conservatives in states voting Tuesday.

It didn't work.

Republican Rick Santorum, a fierce and vocal opponent of abortion and gay rights, beat the GOP front-runner in Minnesota and Colorado caucuses and won bragging rights for placing first in Missouri's non-binding primary. The victories exposed Romney's longtime struggles to convince cultural conservatives that he's now in line with their beliefs despite his previous support of abortion rights.

Before the results were in for Colorado, Romney told supporters in Denver: "This was a good night for Rick Santorum. I want to congratulate Sen. Santorum, but I expect to become the nominee with your help."

Earlier in the day, the former Massachusetts governor's team had worked to lower expectations in the run up to voting in the three states and the candidate himself had started emphasizing his positions on social issues in the days since he won Saturday's Nevada caucuses. It was a clear sign that he sensed a threat from Santorum, who was challenging Newt Gingrich for the claim of conservative alternative to Romney.

As Romney's day began, he told supporters in Loveland that President Barack Obama was overseeing "an assault on religion ? an assault on the conviction and religious beliefs on members of our society."

Romney, who is a Mormon, cited the Obama administration's recent decision to require church-affiliated employers to cover birth control for their employees regardless of the institutions' religious beliefs. Romney called the ruling "a real blow ... to our friends in the Catholic faith" and likened so-called morning-after pills to "abortive pills."

"This kind of assault on religion will end if I'm president of the United States," he said.

Later in the day, Romney pounced after a federal appeals court ruled that a voter-approved ban on gay marriage in California violated the Constitution.

"Today, unelected judges cast aside the will of the people of California who voted to protect traditional marriage," he said in a written statement. "I believe marriage is between a man and a woman and, as president, I will protect traditional marriage and appoint judges who interpret the Constitution as it is written and not according to their own politics and prejudices."

As Romney stepped up his emphasis on social issues, Santorum and rival Gingrich intensified their criticism of Romney on those same issues.

Gingrich, a Catholic, told voters in Ohio that Obama had declared war on the Catholic Church and that Romney was no better than Obama on the issue.

"There's been a lot of talk about the Obama administration's attack on the Catholic Church," Gingrich said at a chili restaurant in Cincinnati. "Well, the fact is, Gov. Romney insisted that Catholic hospitals give out abortion pills, against their religious beliefs, when he was governor."

In late 2005, Romney required all Massachusetts hospitals, including Catholic ones, to provide emergency contraception to rape victims. Some Catholics say the so-called morning-after pill is a form of abortion.

Romney said he did not support the Massachusetts law, which passed despite his veto. But he also said at the time, "My personal view, in my heart of hearts, is that people who are subject to rape should have the option of having emergency contraception or emergency contraception information."

In an op-ed published Tuesday in Politico, Santorum seized on Romney's 2005 decision.

"He said then that he believed `in his heart of hearts' that receiving these contraceptives ? free of charge ? trumped employees' religious consciences," said Santorum, a Catholic. "Now, a few years later and running for president, his heart is strategically aligned with religious voters opposing this federal mandate."

Romney's focus came as his campaign prepared for a weak showing Tuesday. Campaign political director Rich Beeson issued a memo to reporters that said Romney won't win every contest. He has lost two of the contests held thus far.

"As our campaign has said from the outset, Mitt Romney is not going to win every contest. John McCain lost 19 states in 2008, and we expect our opponents will notch a few wins, too," Beeson wrote. "But unlike the other candidates, our campaign has the resources and organization to keep winning over the long run."

Santorum, who hadn't won a contest since eking out a victory in Iowa, hoped to ride social conservative support back to relevance. Polling from contests in Florida and Nevada suggest that Romney is still vulnerable among his party's most socially conservative voters.

While Romney scored convincing victories in both states, slightly more evangelical or born-again voters supported Gingrich over Romney in Florida. And while Romney showed improvement among that demographic in Nevada, he won them over by a relatively thin margin.

For now, he's showing no signs of backing off his push for the social conservative vote, even as Republicans and general election voters report that they're far more concerned about the nation's economy.

Romney said the California gay marriage ruling "does not end this fight, and I expect it to go to the Supreme Court."

"That prospect underscores the vital importance of this election and the movement to preserve our values," he said.

Komen exec quits after Planned Parenthood flap

(AP Photo/John Bazemore, File)

(AP) ? An executive at the Susan G. Komen for the Cure breast cancer charity resigned Tuesday over her support to strip Planned Parenthood of funding, but disputed that she was the driving force behind the decision that created a firestorm of criticism last week.

Karen Handel, the charity's vice president for public policy, said in her resignation later she was "deeply disappointed by the gross mischaracterizations of the strategy, its rationale, and her involvement."

Handel said the discussion to cut funding for Planned Parenthood started before she came to the group last year, and was approved at the highest levels of the charity. However, a person with direct knowledge of decision-making at Komen's headquarters said Handel was a driving force behind the move.

Handel supported a decision Komen announced to exclude Planned Parenthood, which provides a range of women's health care services including abortions, from future grants for breast-cancer screenings because it was under congressional investigation.

"Neither the decision nor the changes themselves were based on anyone's political beliefs or ideology," Handel said in the letter. "Rather, both were based on Komen's mission and how to better serve women, as well as a realization of the need to distance Komen from controversy."

Handel said the now-abandoned policy was fully vetted by the Komen organization. Its board did not raise any objections when it was presented with the proposed policy in November, Handel said.

Komen Founder and CEO Nancy G. Brinker said she accepted Handel's resignation and wished her well.

"We have made mistakes in how we have handled recent decisions and take full accountability for what has resulted, but we cannot take our eye off the ball when it comes to our mission," Brinker said in a statement. "To do this effectively, we must learn from what we've done right, what we've done wrong and achieve our goal for the millions of women who rely on us."

Planned Parenthood spokeswoman Andrea Hagelgans declined to comment on the resignation.

The breast cancer charity cited a probe backed by anti-abortion groups and launched by Rep. Cliff Stearns, R-Fla., to determine if Planned Parenthood improperly spent public money on abortions. Planned Parenthood says taxpayer money is strictly separated.

The breast cancer charity reversed course after its decision created a three-day firestorm of criticism. Members of Congress and Komen affiliates accused the group's national leadership of bending to pressure from anti-abortion activists. Brinker denied the accusation.

Until Tuesday, Handel had publicly kept silent about her role in the dispute.

In her letter, she said the controversy surrounding Planned Parenthood was long a concern to Komen officials.

"Neither the decision nor the changes themselves were based on anyone's political beliefs or ideology," Handel said in the letter. "Rather, both were based on Komen's mission and how to better serve women, as well as a realization of the need to distance Komen from controversy."

A person with direct knowledge of decision-making at Komen's headquarters in Dallas said the grant-making criteria were adopted with the deliberate intention of targeting Planned Parenthood. The criteria's impact on Planned Parenthood and its status as the focus of government investigations were highlighted in a memo distributed to Komen affiliates in December.

According to the person, who spoke on condition of anonymity for fear of repercussions, a driving force behind the move was Handel, who was hired by Komen last year as vice president for public policy after losing a campaign for governor in Georgia in which she stressed her anti-abortion views and frequently denounced Planned Parenthood.

Brinker, in an interview with MSNBC last week, said Handel didn't have a significant role in the policy change.

Handel, a Republican, ran for Georgia governor in 2010, received an endorsement from former vice presidential candidate and Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin. But Handel lost a primary runoff to former Georgia Rep. Nathan Deal, who won the general election.

Throughout the campaign, Deal accused Handel of being soft on abortion.

Deal repeatedly attacked Handel over a 2005 vote she took while serving on a metro Atlanta county commission to give more than $400,000 to Planned Parenthood, though not for abortion services. The Georgia affiliate of Planned Parenthood said the money went to a downtown clinic for services such as cervical cancer screenings, testing for sexually transmitted diseases and birth controls.

A longstanding law bans using federal money to pay for abortions except in cases of rape, incest or to protect the health of the mother.

Anti-abortion activists in Georgia praised Handel's decision.

"I commend her for it," said Daniel Becker, president of the Georgia Right to Life.

He said the organization still had concerns about Handel's belief that women who are raped or victims of incest should be allowed to seek abortions.

Stop at red light - Internet Business Productivity

??Back to blog home page

We are rushing too much. I've been traveling to many places in the world and in almost every city people are rushing like there is no tomorrow. The run to work, shopping, everywhere...

Let's start with traffic lights...

There is a device present at nearly every corner of nearly every street and it is called: "traffic lights". The purpose of this device is to tell you when you're allowed to cross the street and when you are not. The basic usage: green light = "walk", red light = "don't walk". In theory, this is simple.

A novel idea: What if we paid attention to traffic lights?

The bigger the city the more people ignore traffic lights. And it's not just because they're rushing so much, it's because they see them as a stupid device that is not allowing them to cross the street when there's obviously no car coming their way. Until there is one, that is.

What if cars started ignoring the traffic lights?

Well, I don't have to ask myself this question at all - in the city I live now most of the small crossroads have traffic lights but the cars ignore them. They just drive through when there is no pedestrian on the street. Until there is one, that is.

This blog post is NOT about traffic lights at all.

I didn't write it to lecture you on traffic safety. I didn't post it because I have a three-year-old and I want to teach her how to cross the street properly. I just wanted to ask - why do we rush so much?

Stop at the red light and breathe.

Just stop. Look around. Pay attention to what's around you - breathe. I got sucked into this, too. I noticed it became my habit of just crossing the street "on red" even if I wasn't running late or anything. So I decided to stop. To see what's around me, to appreciate the world and enjoy the busy hour in the city. We run and rush so much we stop noticing the world around us and risk being killed by a car.

Stop. Breathe. Take notice. Let the red light remind you that there's no need to rush - you'll make it. You'll be fine.

And what do you think?

Is the Real Estate Investment Getting Better? - Real Estate Investing

The following article is one that you should read to get some encouragement about the real estate market. ?I think it also gives good tips, check it out.

This article talks about the current real estate investment market place and some of the things that are happening out there.

I talk to a lot of real estate investors and one of the things that they are consistently telling me is that they are having a little bit of difficulty in finding a good properties to purchase. They have been wondering why that?s the case.

As we know that every deal out there is not really a good deal and analyzing that becomes really important.

One of the reasons that we are having difficulty as a real estate investor in finding good deals has to do with loan modifications.

I want to talk a little bit about a new report that has come out on a loan modification situation. As you know a lot of people are getting their loans modified or trying to get their loans modified and what that?s doing is delaying some of the foreclosure and delaying some of the inventory that may be coming into the market.A new report that just came out, is talking about, ?More rejections of loan modifications are happening then actual approvals.?

This is important for us to realize that if those properties gets rejected or cancelled, then those properties are going to end up back in the market place or short sale or foreclosure type of situation.

This loan modification is kind of a new thing. It?s not something that is happening year after year. It has just happened in the last couple of years. It?s a new type of thing that people are trying to do and the banks are working towards due to the tarp type situation.

But what?s happening is that majority of these banks are not getting the loan modifications. So, you have got a home owner that?s in distress, that doesn?t do short sale or doesn?t go to foreclosure and is in this loan modification phase for several months, which is delaying some of those properties coming on the market.

One of the things I think is that number of people that are hoping that their loan modification will happen have stopped their natural flow of properties, that they were typically going to see and they may have squeeze some of the available properties that are out there.

I hope this may help you in understanding what is happening but here is the good news…

It?s time to start looking for those types of properties because as those have been slowed down or rejected and the loan modifications aren?t happening like they were in the past and there are more rejections and cancellations than there are approvals, those properties are going to start becoming available for short sale and for banks they foreclosed on.

There?s going to be opportunities that are coming. So, that?s the exciting news as if you have been looking for those good deals, I think you are going to start seeing more and more of them as time goes on here.

There is also some good information where we are starting to see the real estate investment market stabilize.

There?s a new report that says, ?75% of the prices of the properties in the United States will going to stabilize by the end of 2011?. We have already started witnessing that and I think that?s very good information for you as a real estate investor.

Take this, work out with it, go out there and look at some of the good properties. Hard money lenders are looking forward to help you by giving you loans to purchase these properties and start your real estate investing career.

Our goal is to help you make some profit. We want to put money in your pocket. We want to see better neighborhoods and we want to help you to make the community a better place.

Real estate investment only focus on finding good deals and this is should be your first step before investing in real estate.

Don't Forget a Home Inspection with a New Construction Home ...

By Dan Steward Print Article?Print Article

Every home?whether it?s a resale or new?has some kind of an issue, and the reality is that there is no ?perfect? house. Many homebuyers embark on their search for a home with the belief that new homes should be flawless, when this is never actually the case.

Problems are found in all homes, but the issues with new homes are totally different than the defects found in resale homes. When evaluating a resale home, most problems are often related to older systems that are near the end of their service life. On the other hand, problems in new homes typically involve incomplete work, damaged systems, missing pieces of key materials and imperfect workmanship.

Unfortunately, many people who purchase new construction homes put a lot of trust in their builder and opt not to perform a home inspection. REALTORS? can help their clients take a proactive approach to identifying underlying problems in new homes by recommending a reliable home inspection company that goes beyond the basics to provide thorough home inspections that catch even the smallest of problems. Hiring a home inspection company prior to the closing of a new home can help save homebuyers money and prevent headaches due to unexpected home repairs down the road.

New home construction problems primarily fall into four categories:

1. Incomplete work: Many new home construction projects aren?t completed properly. The incomplete work may be as simple as a layer of paint on a wall that was accidentally skipped, or a room that has no air ducting. In many cases, the unfinished or imperfect work isn?t detected until the homebuyer moves in. A home inspection company will uncover these issues prior to the move-in date.

2. Damaged systems and finishes: Homes often incur damage during construction as a result of rain, snow, impact damage and stacking and storage damage. An example of this is ducting that gets compacted under attic insulation.

3. Missing elements: Oversights during construction due to human error are more common than many REALTORS? and homebuyers think. For example, the construction team may have forgotten to install insulation in the attic. Taking a proactive approach to identify issues before moving in can prevent costly problems that could arise in the future.

4. Imperfect or sloppy workmanship: While perfect workmanship is ideal, it?s nearly impossible. In reality, any number of things can go wrong on the construction site of a new home. A contractor could get delayed by work on another site and has to hurry to finish the current home he?s working on; rain and other elements can damage a home before it?s closed in; tradesmen could be diverted to another site, etc.

Other common problems with new homes include interior and exterior finish issues, tile and floor damage, water damage, buckled siding, roofing issues and structural problems. All new homes should be inspected to uncover possible defects. Knowing upfront what issues might arise in the future can save homebuyers thousands of dollars in the long term. The most reliable way to uncover problems is by hiring an unbiased third-party home inspector.

Demi Moore Seeking Treatment at Rehab Facility: Source (omg!)

Demi Moore Seeking Treatment at Rehab Facility: Source

Demi Moore is on the road to recovery.

Eleven days after she suffered a seizure after smoking an "incense-like substance" January 23, a source confirms to Us Weekly that the actress is currently receiving rehabilitation treatment.

PHOTOS: Demi's shrinking figure

E! News reports Moore is being treated at Cirque Lodge in Sundance, Utah, for an eating disorder and addiction issues. "She's on total lockdown and only talking to a small group of people," a source told E! of Moore.

Known for its individualized approach to addiction treatment, the super-posh Cirque Lodge has also helped Lindsay Lohan, Mary-Kate Olsen and Eva Mendes overcome their addictions.

Moore's decision to seek treatment comes on the heels of a sad downward spiral for the Margin Call star.

"Everyone thought she was going to die," a source tells Us Weekly of the night Moore was urgently transported to Sherman Oaks Hospital after collapsing at a party as her 23-year-old daughter Rumer Willis looked on. "It was terrifying."

AUDIO: Hear Demi's harrowing 911 call

Insiders tell the new issue of Us Weekly that the dramatic episode was the culmination of escalating drug use, which helped push estranged husband Ashton Kutcher away -- and only got worse once they separated last November.

"Demi's life is in compete crisis. She has spiraled since her split from Ashton," says a source of Moore, who also began chasing after daughter Rumer's 24-year-old pal Zac Efron. "She is turning 50 in November and has no idea who she is or what her life should be."

PHOTOS: Demi and Ashton in happier times

Friends are relieved the actress is seeking treatment -- more than 20 years after she first went to rehab in 1985. "She knows she's in a bad place and needs help," a source explains. "Rehab is the only thing she can do right now. She needed something serious to get her back on track."
